I've traveled to most of the medium sized cities in Texas, and I was curious as to how others viewed these cities.

I'm talking about cities like Abilene, Amarillo, Midland, Lubbock, Beaumont, Laredo, Wichita Falls, Kileen, Waco, BCS, Tyler, Marshall....etc. This does not include large suburban cities.

I will fully admit my bias (sinced I onced lived there), but I have a hard time not ranking Waco #1.

Waco is within 3 hours of the 5 largest cities in Texas and only a 1.5 hour drive from Austin or Dallas.
Lots of different type of neighborhoods, and pretty decent food for a smaller city.

If you want to attend a Mavs, Cowboys or Rangers game you can be there within 2 hours. You can attend big time college athletics at Baylor...as well as an easy drive to UT or A&M.

I would have a very hard time ever living in Midland, Amarillo, Odessa or Lubbock because the idea of being located hours from a major city out in the middle of nowhere is quite depressing.

I started this thread because Im currently working in Midland/Odessa and this is ugliest, most low class city I've ever been to. People here are just generally stupid.

2. Tyler - The higher class neighborhoods in Tyler remind me of what you might find in the Atlanta suburbs like Alpharetta, Milton or Dunwoody. The piney woods give the really nice neighborhoods the same type of vibe as The Woodlands in Houston. Great Medical District and old oil money.
Easy access to Dallas and Shreveport

3. Longview- See above

4. Bryan-College Station. Would rank higher if aggy wasn't located there. Easy acess to Houston. Big time college athletics

I've spent a lot of time in BCS the last four years with a partnership between my job and TAMU. I lived in Waco for six years pre Chip and JoAnn. BCS and Waco are a coin flip for the one spit in my mind.

Port Arthur, Beaumont, Odessa and Midland all lose points from the constant smell of petro, and the risk of cancer that comes from living in these places.

Laredo and McAllen are great if you speak Spanish.

I've never, ever, ever spent time at Ft Hood.
FYI my company was a DOD contractor when they moved from the old hospital to the new Darnall Army Medical Center circa 2016.

I damn near lived in Kileen from 2014-16 installing our system at the new military hospital. Killeen does suck, but which medium sized city in Texas is better?

It was quite easy to swing over to Waco for mid week basketball games, and it was not hard to get to Austin or Dallas from Kileen.


Instead of being a snarkly little azzhole why don't you contribute to the thread, and tell me which cities you think are better and why.

I went to the Abilene Mall to do some shopping. I was in the bathroom handling my business, and I witnessed a mall worker walk straight out of the bathroom without washing his hands.....after doing #2.

Later that night I went to Texas Roadhouse and the server took away my salt and pepper to give to another customer while I was in the middle of eating.

Last week I was in Midland (honestly, what prompted this thread) I saw a young guy with a giant pick up truck go into a gas station and park in the handicap parking without a care in the world. Mind you, there were a ton of open parking spaces....this guy didn't give a damn about anyone except himself.

The Texas Triangle is full of people who were not Texans a few decades ago

Hard to find a map of % born in State of Texas by county…but it would probably show Triangle counties over represented in the "born out of state" vs "born in state" category

Great topic. You could further break this down into a "smedium" subcategory of towns like Stephenville, Brownwood, Paris, Texarkana, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Del Rio. Stephenville seems to have some momentum and an underrated restaurant scene..

On topic, I agree that it's probably between Waco and Tyler. I was at a BBQ concert festival in downtown Tyler a few years ago and their downtown had potential, but otherwise seemed sleepy. It's pretty though and growth outside the loop to the South.

I was in Abilene last weekend, so I know that's not sniffing #1. Seemed a lot of the nicer areas and growth was headed towards Buffalo Gap. Just not much happening.

Haven't been to Angelo in 20 years. Good mexican food and chicken fried as well as fishing spots. Blaine's Pub was a cool spot back then.

Amarillo I actually didn't think was so bad, on the western/southwestern side of town, but they got all of the weather - good, bad and ugly.
