I never buy extended warranties. I always as "Are you saying it's a bad product?"

They always say no. I've never regretted it.

My basic philosophy is yes on things the kids beat the heck out of. So, I bought one on my wife when I married 21 years ago. Bought one on a Kindle fire for my son, a laptop for my daughter, and a RC airplane for my son. Never purchased one on an auto.

Claimed it on the tablet as he accidently flipped it like a Frisbee across our church parking lot.

I never buy unless the warranty is less than 10% of the price (rarity) and also if I expect I will beat it up (tools, for example).

Now, I will say that I drive my cars at least 7 years and frequently longer. So I do typically buy an extended warranty on those. The ones that are worth anything are expensive but if you buy the transferable warranty I do believe it helps significantly with getting a higher price at resale down the road. (Then again, I always sell private party.) I feel like, if I pay $2K for the extended warranty, I usually can get $500-1K of that back are resale time to hedge that cost.

Extended warranties problem is price point.

Square trade charges $200 for 3 years on a laptop. They are a good company.

You can get a really good laptop for $1,000 - that is 20% over 3 years

If that same rate were for homeowners insurance, that would 20K on a $300,000 home

Only insure my life, car, and home. I'll roll the dice on electronics.

I used to buy them for VCRs and cassette decks -- because the dang things broke down regularly, especially when you had a kid. Used them more than once too.

The basic question, it seems to me, is how likely is the thing to break. Never bought one for things like speakers, amps, etc. with no significant moving parts. Generally no on computers. Have bought one on the two most recent TVs, because they were cheap compared to the cost of the TV.

What about things last me "apple care"?

Last week, I dropped my phone three times with it breaking the third time. It was beyond any warranty.
