Just watched--Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as Lawmen (Hamer, et al).

Costner produced it all.

Didn't realize until the credits rolled--directed by John Lee Hancock

Not sure it was a great movie; told the story a bit differently than the "Bonnie and Clyde" I grew up with. But anything based in real history I'll watch.

Is this the "Highwaymen" show? I started the first episode a few weeks ago and haven't gone back to it. It seemed promising.

I thought it had a slow start but was a good movie.

This is not a weekly. It is a made for TV movie.

I liked The Highwaymen. It seemed realistic to me.

One of the subplots in this Netflix version that indicated SOMEONE (either Costner or Director Hancock) wanted to make a social statement was the brief dialogue in which Costner's character as head lawman meets and talks to Clyde Barrow's father, wanting to get some context.

Barrow's father wants former Texas Ranger Frank Hamer to know HE had nothing to do with his son Clyde Barrow's lawlessness. And, at the end of the brief scene, the senior Mr. Barrow pleads with the Hamer (Costner) to "end this NOW" knowing that the only thing that will end this is his son's death.

Tragic, but especially interesting in light of a TV movie wanting to tell a different story than the previous iterations of the story. The Faye Dunaway/George Hamilton version had Bonnie and Clyde simply ambushed from the hedges whereas this Costner/Hancock version as Hamer stepping in to the middle of the road to try to confront Barrow in at least an attempt to give the fugitives one last chance.

I would need to read several actual historical narratives to see what it was that had that as a major difference in the final climactic scene of "ambush" vs. "attempt to spare life".

I love John Lee Hancock's work, but keep in mind that this is not a documentary:

I enjoyed it. Had no idea how "popular" they were with the masses. The movie claimed funeral attendance of 15K for Clyde and 20K for Bonnie!

Of course they were! Everyone hated the banks during the depression!

You just NOW figured out John Lee was the director? It's been posted on here a ton of times!

Sorry, Alfred. As much as I support Sic'em with $$$, I DON'T read every thread.

. . . and I STILL like the Dunaway/Hamilton version best.

Is that OKAY?

Not OKAY. Because it was Warren Beatty, not George Hamilton.

I'm So ashamed! How can I ever be conversant with current media again.

I go to Sic'em timeout; not to be heard from until an unanounced future time.

That 1967 version was garbage.

The 1967 movie was accurate only in the gunfight scenes. Everything in that movie about Frank Hamer was pure Hollywood nonsense. Probably why the Hamer family sued.

Hancock's version was a lot more accurate than I expected, considering Hamer being played by Mr. Dances with Wolves and Gault played by Woody from Cheers. Didn't like that they made Ted Hinton look like such a wimp.
