Best airplane of the WWII era. You get to define best. Fighter, bomber, cargo, Axis, Allies etc. The only thread rule is that you need to defend your pick with some reasonable support.

The fastest piston-driven plane of the era and had the highest survival rate of any plane in the war even though it was made primarily of wood. Used in a variety of roles.

P38 Lightning... used from 1939 until end of the War. The P51 Mustang was better but had to be developed later in the war. The Zero was the only plane used all thru the war that was close the the Lightning.

The ME 262 jet fighter was a great late development but too little too late for the Gremans

regarding the 262, I believe it wasn't used properly if I recall correctly.

I am a little biased. My Uncle was a B-52 bomber pilot. Must be a good aircraft because many of the damn things are still in service today!

Its from a different ere than WWII but I certainly know what you mean. The airframes are older than the crews than man them. They are very adaptable to a wide range of missions. I feel the same way about the C130.
