How do you cope? It gets tough sometimes.

I would also add, get a physical. I am continually surprised at the number of people taking meds for depression who turned out to have diabetes, thyroid, or other issues.

Step 1. Pray...just start doing it. And not evangelical style. That does not help people who are in a dark place already and can't be expected to come up with positive prayers on their own. Buy a prayer book of eastern orthodox or old school Anglican style prayers and then just start methodically praying them. Start out at just 5 mins....keeping doing it until you can do if for 5 hrs or more if need be. Break your dark thoughts on the rack of these pure spiritual prayers.
Step 2. Cut out junk food. Start eating red meat and small amounts of vegetables. Also, every few days try periodic fasting. Just go without breakfast and lunch and wait to eat until dinner. Our bodies were not made to eat as much processed food and sugar as we are getting daily.
Step 3. Cardio, cardio, cardio.....just start running and do it all the time. It releases natural dopamine. Cold showers in the morning. Warm baths at night. Get regular sleep. 6-8 hrs of restful sleep and go to bed early.
Step 4. Get involved in some social groups outside of work. Church, Freemasons, knitting club....does not matter what just join a club and be around people. Do not isolate yourself!
Step 5. Turn off the tv....media, internet, political news 24/7 is designed to make you depressed...so is internet porn. Stay away from that crap.
Step 6. Being married to someone you can love and be love by really helps....obviously depression can come from not being in a relationship like this so this might not help in terms of advice.
Good luck brother....you are not alone...I will be praying for you by your username tonight!
I have anxiety, for which I take meds, and have bouts of depression. I pray alot and I can say that getting outside and walking/jogging helps.atomicblast said:

as a christian, this is spot on.nein51 said:
Find a therapist and not one at your church. God may be the answer but not to issues that can be managed with medication and therapy. An opinion that will surely be hated on a Baylor forum.
Take the medication you are given if that occurs.
Get really good at telling other people when you need help.
It's never been an issue for me but it is for my wife. Before the medication...holy cow. It was really hard for me to understand. I never meant it in a mean way but I just thought "you can choose to be happy". That doesn't work for people who have depression.
