The San Benito school district expressed its condolences on its Facebook page Saturday.

"The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Nate Carman, and the district's sports and educational community were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bobby Joe Morrow," the Facebook post says.

"On behalf of our entire San Benito CISD family, I extend our most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the Morrow family. They will be in our thoughts and prayers," Carman said in the post.

"Mr. Morrow's legacy will live on forever in San Benito as he is the namesake of two of our sports facilities."

Morrow won three gold medals at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. He won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter sprint and anchored the gold medal winning 4100-meter relay team.

Later in life, Morrow achieved fame with appearances on the cover of Life and SPORT magazine.

He was born in Harlingen on Oct. 15, 1935, and raised in San Benito. Before becoming a sprinter, Morrow played for the San Benito High School football team.

He graduated from San Benito High School in 1954 and went on to attend Abilene Christian University, where he was a sprinter.

In 1989, he was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

In 2006, San Benito High School named its football stadium Bobby Morrow Stadium in his honor.

He was seemingly effortless. One of the greatest ever.

Although he'd begun singing and playing guitar in public as a young man, the spotlight escaped him until late in life.
