A remembrance of days gone by: Our hunting camp in 1990

As some of you may know, I lost my younger brother suddenly on April 11 of this year. In digging through all the photos and old VHS tapes of our times together, I came across this one I taped back in Dec. 1990 with one of those big, old shoulder-mount camcorders.
It's of our deer camp out in Pecos County, Texas.
Had to get the clunky VHS digitized, then I uploaded it to YouTube.
Besides my brother, my best friend appears in this video.
He died in 1999.
It's good to see and hear them again, but it's a reminder of what was lost.
This footage was shot 30 years ago.
Just dang hard to believe that they are gone, and God has let me live this long.
I have no idea why He kept me around when they were called home.
I don't deserve it.

WARNING: If you are offended by video of dead deer, please fast forward past those parts.

I don't know how old you are, but I graduated high school in 1982 and several of my classmates have passed. I too wonder why God keeps me around.

I've watched your video as well as the tribute to your brother. I will pray for you and hope that God continues to bless you.

Looks like your brother was 66...not very old.

He was a mere 65. His birthday was/is the day after Christmas.

We had a lot of fun.

What an awesome memory to have. It is hard to believe that 1990 was 30 years ago. When I hear 1990, it feels like 10 years ago.

You guys had a great camp site. I've never seen that many big trees together in one site in Pecos County.

Looks like a successful hunt.

Mexican sausage and eggs. I'm suddenly hungry at midnight.

For the young boys, is there anything more fun than camping?

Sorry for your loss. I lost my second sibling last month. It has been really tough as I'm sure your loss has been for you.

I got your package and look forward to viewing though it may be later in October. My wife wants to me get rid of some stuff on the DVR.

Outstanding video.

I think that's a big old whitetail, FWIW.

They were in a narrow strip, down low, between two mesas so they got all the runoff from both sides.
Hackberry trees.
You could walk the strip of hackberries for about three miles, but if you walked to your left, or right, you were out in open country in about 75 yards.

I have seen "hybrid" deer out here, or a cross between a whitetail and a mule deer. (We have both.)
Usually it is the rack.
One half of it is a whitetail antler, the other half is a mule deer.
Whitetail on the left side, mule deer on the right.
But unless you did a DNA test, you won't really know.

We DO get some very large-bodied whitetails out here. For some reason their racks don't grow the thick tines you see in South Texas whitetails. My guess is that it has to do with the minerals out here. More alkaline.

But make no mistake that I love hunting out here. I've been a lucky SOB and have enjoyed a great life.
