UNC is in no shape, form or fashion tied to Duke and the SEC has no use for Duke.
I would say both of those conclusions would be misreads. The SEC cares a lot about basketball and has invested, as a conference, significant resources behind it in the last 5 years. And in any case, MBB is a money sport, they would be stupid not to care about it, especially where the two biggest name brands in CBB are concerned.
Teams earn their conferences a lot of money by making NCAA tourney runs. The overwhelming majority of money the NCAA makes and distributes to conferences comes from March Madness. A Final Four appearance is worth $8 million to a conference. In other words, UNC and Duke made the ACC $16 million in one night this year. The SEC would be stupid to ignore that if they have the possibility to add both.
It is ALL about football and delivering markets. period. end of discussion. We learned that the last go round with Kansas. Though they are excellent in basketball, the Jayhawks were not wanted-- anywhere.
Hoops is nice and all, but UNC rings the SEC and B1G bell. Duke does not. Duke is actually a better fit for Big East b/c of basketball. Wake Forest, too.
If the SEC wants Clemson, FSU and prolly UNC and Miami, they got them. IF that happens, look for UVA and Syracuse to go to B1G quickly.
That actually may be good for the Big12: NC State, VaTech, Pitt and Louisville are pretty good.
