Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah were mentioned specifically as the teams being targeted by the Big 12, sources tell CBS Sports. There is also consideration of adding Oregon and Washington to make the Big 12 an 18-team league, the largest in the FBS.
A merger of the Big 12 and Pac-12, in some form, is also a possibility.
"Everything is on the table," said one Big 12 source.
There is "no question" the Big 12 has to be aggressive in expansion, another conference source said.
One industry source suggested the Big 12 should quickly expand with Pac-12 teams then go to market early with rightsholders to get ahead of the Pac-12. The Pac-12 deal with Fox and ESPN expires in 2024. The Big 12's deal with the same networks expires in 2025.

I'd be shocked if Big12 didn't end up with PAC12 - Oregon State and Washington State by the end of this. Cal and Stanford in California are too valuable of brands to be left in the cold.

It's also the foundation of a larger merger with the ACC valuable members to thwart the SEC / Big10 conglomerate.

P5 becomes p3 with the coast to coast (former big12 PAC12 ACC) having enough members (and political clout) to keep a check on the other two.

I get being aggressive with adding schools. I don't get the obsession that we have to target P12 schools. Why not reach out to the ACC? UNC, VA Tech, Miami are all better options that AZ CO and ASU

The pac12 schools are mostly large land grant schools (except Stanford) and have a very long sports history, far longer than the Big12.

Add in the complicated GoR issue with the ACC while the PAC12 is crumbling, and you get a marriage of convenience. PAC12 gets better on field performance and teams that care about football, while big12 gets major brands they don't have today.

Mutually beneficial and in the world of super conferences (20-30 teams) lays the foundation of a potential future with the ACC teams. In general, the ACC probably looks down on the lack of academics in the Big12, but with 6-8 PAC12 schools raising the bar, they may be more interested.

Because a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

We are looking to create the #3 conference in money (maybe stronger in winning).
By making the Big 12 stronger, we are more attractive to ACC schools that don't go Big 10 or SEC.

Every ACC school is off the table. They are locked in a LT contract until 2036.

The only way anyone gets out is if they can find a cost-effective way to escape to the SEC or B1G.

Aside from the top 4 or 5 ACC schools, everyone else sucks at football. Their TV viewership and attendance are horrendous. We're talking AAC/MWC level. Those schools don't add value in football and football is the only thing that matters right now.

Stanford and (especially) Cal will never join the Big 12. They'd rather go independent than be in a conference with BYU and Baylor. Even though Baylor has eased its LGBT policies, it's still not enough to appease them and BYU is considered one of the 10 most anti-LGBT schools in the nation.

If anything, Stanford goes independent or somehow works out a deal with the ACC and Cal drops football and joins the West Coast Conference.

I'm all for adding ACC teams, but because of their current contractual obligations it is probably to let someone else blow up the conference before we move in.

Have you not watched CO and AZ football? Those 2 are ass. Not to mention they draw terrible to home games. ASU is getting pushed as this great get and in reality they're very average in athletics. Average in a below average conference football wise at least. So please explain what value from a football perspective adding CO and AZ does aside from give KU competition as the worst FBS program

I don't like nor want Colorado either.

Arizona and ASU adds another intriguing rivalry in a conference of misfits.
ASU is not leaving unless Arizona joins them.
The Big 12 needs ASU.
If the Big 12 can grab AZ/ASU/Utah, then that might force Oregon and Washington to relent and join the Big 12. It also effectively kills the conference.
Arizona is as elite in basketball as most of those ACC schools.
Finally, the ACC schools are not an option. Period. Their contract precludes it until 2036.

Times change. When the Big 8 & SWC merged the other schools were saying the same thing about us.....and deservedly so.

Adding the four to six "next best brands" out of the PAC-12 cements the Big 12 as the "next best" conference. That will be important when the ACC eventually goes through what the Big 12 and PAC-12 already have as it will make the Big 12 the logical landing spot for all of the ACC teams you want and can't add now because of that league's grant of rights deal.

This is a pretty basic game of Risk. You take the most valuable territory available to you first.

Kill the PAC now and later kill the ACC. The B12 has a golden opportunity to become the hunter and not the prey.

I agree, but I think the P12 GOR is up next year, and the ACC is wrapped up through 2036 which if I understand correctly makes it much harder to get out of.

I would rather expand with a combo of both, but you have to take what you can get now

Utah would be a great get. Good football team and a rival of BYU. The Arizona schools are kind of meh but Arizona would just be another Kansas (terrible in football and elite in basketball). Arizona St has one of the largest student bodies and is located in the Phoenix market. Colorado is the one that doesn't get me excited at all. But geographically it makes sense and Boulder is a fun visit.

Regardless, the Big 12 would be silly not to add right now. This is the chance to change the "Big 12 is doomed narrative".

We're not going to be the ones killing the ACC. It's going to be the SEC - Clemson, FSU, Miami and maybe UNC/Duke are going to the SEC, it's only a matter of time. Much like we're doing with the Pac-12, the Big 12 is just going to be the first vulture on the scene picking at the best of what's left.

Which I'm absolutely fine with by the way. Regionally we need an Atlantic hub to build around WVU and UCF, and adding the likes of Wake Forest, NC State, VT or Pitt would help us do that.

Starting to think this could be the one big move and the final be the SEC and B10 just doing it now, one big move. By that I mean the B10 and SEC adding like 10 each now. The article I saw was that OSU and Baylor could be two of the 10 for the SEC, along with Kansas. Apparently there is talk of an SEC/B10 BB tourney for the National Championship, stating that the NIT used to be the big Dance before the NCAAs. So, why not? Lot's of interesting reads out there right now.

The thing that makes me think it may happen is I keep hearing pod-play, to bring back the meaning of regional games. That will quiet alot of people, especially if your school is one of the 30-48. Interesting to see if this happens, but if alternative to the Final Four is being discussed as may be more lucrative, that scares me. (It was on Yahoo).

All speculation from multiple articles, just a thought. Not saying anyone is reporting it!

PAC 12 reporting g wanting a loose alliance. Screw that. That is just an escape hatch for Oregon and Washington.

By the way, ESPNU must have something against Baylor. Dakovik(sp) described Baylor as a dumpster fire, than we won B12. Today Carpenter used Baylor as an example of a school they wouldn't want, good football but no one cares or goes to games. Than said 43k a game was not big time worthy. Why the Baylor disrespect.

And the option? We are not a 3rf tier Conference now? If you can't get the big names, you better have something. Geography is only play or find a TV station as big as ESPN.
