104.9 FM The Horn in Austin (Longhorn station) had Mark Schlabach on this morning, and co-hosts Erin Hogan and Bucky Godbolt were salivating as this has been their purpose in life for the last 2 years.

The co-hosts were constantly trying to get Mark to say nothing has changed and Baylor should be kicked out of the Big 12. Mark tried to keep up with their hatred, at one point saying about the NCAA's investigation of Baylor's drug testing policy ... "maybe that is the way they can get 'em". Openly rooting against Baylor.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that Texas lost to Kansas in football.

Bucky FN Godbolt is still peeved he lost Jerrod Douglas to Baylor. He's blasted BU since he's been on the radio in Austin (at both Horn and KVET). Mr Godbolt has had his share of demons in the past but how quick the righteous can be judges. Erin H used to be rather unbiased-- until 104.9 became the "longhorn station" after outbidding KVET. Let's just say that Mr Hogan knows who butters his bread.

On that terminology though the only phrase I knew was "kick the gong around" and I learned that from the song Minnie the Moocher

It doesn't make it right, but the thing you must remember is that a book like this focuses on the sensationalized portion, which is the 10% and less factor yet seems like 90% because a book doesn't sell if it focuses on all the campus students like me who were completely oblivious to all of those shenanigans. I have a feeling the Baylor you knew wasn't much different. You were just like me, in the 90% who didn't know the 10% were doing those things.

This. You can find trouble at Baylor just like any other campus. The bigger difference is you can find fraternities (big ones) who have bible studies and stay out of trouble on the weekends and they are not weirdos like at big public schools. There are 10% or maybe more but not a majority that want to get wild, but most are not looking for that.

I'm not suggesting that a small minority of Baylor students (including some athletes) aren't into wild partying/drinking/drugs, etc., but seriously, who decides to go to Baylor because they want to attend a "party school"?? If that is one of your major or even minor requirements, I'm pretty sure Baylor won't be showing up on your list of most desired universities to attend.
Every college is a party college at some level. There are some kids going crazy at BYU as we speak, and there are some studious virgins at West Virginia.

If you choose to be a party student at Baylor, let me tell you how much you've cheated yourself.

There are waaaaaay better places...particularly any place near a beach or mountain.

Well, it looks like they will be promoting it heavily throughout football season...well, until the playoff talk gets hot and heavy and they don't have time to fill in on ESPN:

https://violatedbook.com/

Interesting that EVERY planned book signing over the next 3+ months is in Texas. None listed for ANYWHERE else in the country.

Clearly this book is being marketed to Baylor's football opponents. National sexual assault awareness is secondary, but a good way to disguise that fact.

Agenda? At ESPN? Look, they're just a bunch of guys & gals who are crazy about SPORTS and want to share all the fun with you, the viewer! There's no agenda! Robert Lee was the one who brought up the idea for the switch, he, uh, didn't want people to say mean things about him, and uh yeah politics gets mentioned ON RARE OCCASIONS but you know sometimes real life intrudes on entertainment, and uh the athletes, right the athletes have opinions so they are, you know, like journalists and have to follow the story, see?

Absolutely no agenda. I don't even know how a reasonable person could even think that.

Considering Houston will experience extensive flooding, I think they'll be cancelling the book signings, etc.

True. However, Baylor was a good mix. Not enough trouble to be a problem. Campus atmosphere made it easy to party moderately but not have ragers happening every night. Overall the mix worked well for everyone I know.

One good week at University of Virginia, North Carolina, Auburn or Ole Miss and you'd change that opinion.

Sheer numbers for starters, less of a need to 'sneak around,' no followers of Tommye Lou. You get my point.

I am glad you had a good time at Baylor, but I did a tour of those listed above and walked away more impressed.

Sorry our standards were higher than your own.
You're the only one here who is so fixated on Briles. It's weird. Most everyone else sees the larger narrative in which he was just one part.
Much larger narrative documented for decades. They call it rug sweeping, the times finally caught up with the long standing practice.

The new President, in her own way is taking names and......well taking care of business.

You were spot on, MV is a long time shill.

The book is about rape. Certainly some of that rape was tangent to alcohol fueled parties that have always existed.

Are you saying rape has never changed ? or never happened? don't want to put words in your mouth

I just read Violated and hated it. Not necessarily that it was a bad book, or that it's a hack job (it's biased, but not a hack job). It should have an "explicit content" warning. This post refers to that, so stop reading now if you don't want to hear it.

I hated Violated because of its portrayal of campus culture. I know some college kids are going to drink and party and have sex. But in Violated, it's way beyond that.

--House parties that feature gang bangs
--Football players tricking girls into coming over to have sex with multiple guys
--An expectation that a girl who has sex with one guy is willing to be "shared" with his friends
--"Date rape" drugs being frequently used, especially at frat parties
--Audiences forming--and cheering--when people are having sex
--Pot and other drugs freely and openly used
--Drinking to the point of blacking out

You get the idea. . . .

Call me old-fashioned and/or moralistic, but as an alumnus and Baylor parent, my message is CUT IT OUT! These activities are unacceptable and should not be practiced or tolerated by ANY Baylor student!

Like everyone else on this board, I have hated all of the negative publicity and damage this mess has brought to our beloved school. But I really hope that the tide is turning and that I won't read another story about a frat boy raping someone at a party, or students having sex with HS recruits, or a football player beating up his girlfriend, or a Diadeloso get together turning into a gang bang. That's not the Baylor I knew thirty years ago and it's not the Baylor I want for my son.

(And speaking of Diadeloso, please stop making it an excuse for wild, alcohol-fueled parties. That's a sure way to get administration to end a great, fun Baylor tradition.)

OK, rant over. Flame away, if you're so inclined, but I bet many of you, especially parents, agree with me.

So, the OP is about the only one to buy the book, if OP did buy it.

Like Benghazi. russiagate, and any other media conspiracy, what's troubling here is this:

The media can't take off its blinders and look at the problem objectively and make it relevant to a mass Audience. The conservative swath of the US took one look at this, called it crap and moved on.

And college grads from places like UT or any other garden variety state school know that their cultures are far more open to this type of behavior than a 10k student school in Waco, Texas.

Baylor alums are very conscientious and want to do the right thing. They won't be perfect but the mold is now broken. Baylor can grow from this.

But Schlabach and Lavigne now have to explain a dud of a book on their resumes.

If football wasn't involved, this book would never have been written. If Baylor had been bad at football when this happened, no one would have cared and this book would never have been written. Nobody in the big 12 ever asked Kansas about their rape issues with football players. Nobody cares anything about Kansas State's Title ix problems. Nobody cares about Title ix unless it they have some other reason to care.
