Aranda is not going anywhere. We will run out next season with the same core cast of characters. Aranda, Grimes, Shapen, and the Defensive Staff.

We will get similar results as Shapen will last a quarter and a half come up with an injury that will screw up the rest of the season. Grimes will keep running the "wide zone" as he puts together his Coaching Consulting Business. And Dave will keep on appreciating things, like that huge contract. Maybe we can pull out a win against Tx St....

I said this in a different thread but hiring a guy like Chryst would require some questions to be asked about what he wants to try and do. If he is trying to mimic what he did at Wisconsin, that's a tough task. They built up that power run program over a decade before his arrival, with Alvarez as head coach. Then Fats Bielema took over for 5-6 years, they churned through 3 guys in 3-4 years before stabilizing again with Chryst.

Anyways, if his plan was to do bully ball at Baylor, it would take quite a bit of development and patience. Would fans be able to weather a development period?

I think it's slightly possible to play bully ball here, if for no other reason than we pounded the tar out of North Carolina in the Russel Athletic bowl. However, that's just 1 game - not a committed attack for an entire season. Plus, that was 2015, so a full 7 years into Briles tenure. It could take equally as long to recruit and develop the OL workhorses needed for that kind of attack. Do Texas high schools even play that kind of ball? You also have to look at what your recruiting base has.

This. The Midwest is noted for producing solid offensive linemen to play ground and pound. Speed? Not so much. Jaxon Smith Njigba is from Texas. Blake Corum and Treyveon Henderson are from the Virginia/Maryland area. Everyone knows about the speed down in Florida. No Texas team plays ground and pound. Even the SEC has largely moved away from it.

i agree with you guys that we need to consider what is being played in our recruiting grounds and the types of kids we will be looking at

i also believe that it can pay to be different

for example let us say that out of our 9 conference games, 7-8 are spread attacks and 1-2 are pro style offenses. That means everyone is going to recruit for and practice for the spread

if we have bully ball (or just something unique that wasn't grimes crap offense) people are going to have a hard time playing it once a year. even with adjustments and seeing it year over year, they won't have the players to stop it unless they recruit for it specifically

I am probably not articulating my thoughts well but the main idea is do something that is unique in your conference - bully ball wouldn't be unique in the big 10 as several teams still try to do it but I don't think anyone does it in the big 12

I get you but you can run a unique spread. Multiple variations of the spread. Leach vs Rich Rod vs Briles. 3 spread attacks and 3 completely different offenses. You need the personnel and Baylor will always pull the majority of recruits from Texas and neighboring states. Recruits also tend to like high scoring offenses. Name a receiver from a Paul Chryst offense? Plenty of running backs and offensive linemen but not a lot of pass catchers or quarterbacks. Those linemen are big nasty maulers. Cyril Richardson type dudes. Tough for Baylor to recruit and maintain 7-8 of those guys.

Sumrall went to Tulane. Seems weird. Never would have thought a guy would go from Troy to Tulane.

Looks like Matt Entz from NDSU is off to USC as linebackers coach.

Made a lot of updates to the list as there was a lot of head coaching changes and movement this year. Removed Anderson as his last 2 seasons have been meh.

The options are getting more limited as time moves on. Also, there are not new prospects filling the gaps. I've crossed off at least 3-4 guys this off season and not found anyone to replace them.

If Aranda does not turn things around in a big way in 2024, we may end up having only 2-3 good candidates to look at. That's just my opinion. Obviously the official search may include guys not on this list, or guys we think are bad options.

As far as opinions and lists go - I don't think that AD's have some magic formula or special insight when it comes to hiring guys. I bet that fan sites come up with lists that are the same as AD wish lists / candidate lists. The reality is, if you watch a lot of football and pay attention to the trajectory of coaching careers, it's not difficult to make a list of coaches that you think have a higher probability of panning out. There are of course other factors that come into play when making a hire - but if we are strictly looking at results, the cream rises to the top.

Unless there is an obvious choice, most candidates on a message board made up of guys on their couches with no inside info is nothing like the candidates on an AD's notepad. No one had Rhule listed here when we hired him. And on BaylorFans, the masses wanted Singletary instead of Briles (and they wanted Briles fired after season 2). I don't put any stock into who anyone around here wants based on the score of one game.

That's kind of stating the obvious, and yet that doesn't stop literally hundreds of people on the premium board from paying $13 a month to hear other people's opinions about who they may or may not want as the next coach.

I would take just about anybody but Dave. Preferably any head coach that has had recent success in building up a program at the FCS or FBS level. Bonus points if they have personality and a dog mentality
