Jake says you don't have to be perfect on offense to be successful. Made an interesting comment about allowing the receivers freedom to get open. Not sure I understand what that means but that could be why it was difficult for our receivers to get open under Grimes. Maybe we had to be perfect.

At least it's something to which we can look forward

I would imagine it means more option routes, where your break is determined by the defensive look and leverage you're getting.

In other words, if you're getting inside leverage, you run an out-breaking route and vice versa. You're not asked to beat your DB straight up to one spot every play.

#Baylor OC Jake Spavital says that there is a plan in place with the transfer portal but that right now they aren't planning to use it much. It could change based off movement the next couple days.

Currently, looks like the offensive side won't see as much movement as expected.

My two biggest takeaways from Jake Spavital's press conference:

1) This offense will be fun. Lotta tempo & deep shots. (Will it be good? Who knows.)

2) He's trying to make things right w the THSCA after barely recruiting HS players at TXST. Shouted out TXHSFB *several* times.

Well the CAL game film I watched from this year did have some tempo but there was nothing spread, storm, or "deep shots" about it.

It's a competent spread offense. People who think it's going to be reminiscent of the briles offense circa 2013 are going to be disappointed

For some reason when I see his name it always makes me think of some pharmaceutical commercial on TV.

Having trouble picking up first downs? Red Zone offense not performing the way it used to? Is your offense ranked in the triple digits nationally?

"The main thing I look for is their arm strength. Are they capable of making all the throws?"

Says it's more about arm angles, throwing off platform and being mobile, but that he's coached all kinds of QBs before.

I'm guessing since we haven't heard about Sawyer hitting the portal Spav must think he can run this offense. I'm sure they will keep looking to upgrade too if the opportunity presents itself.

It's funny to me that when the team is not doing well, everyone nitpicks irrelevant qualities.

When he was winning, it was so impressive that he was calm and collected and now he is emotionless and can't fire the team up.

Irrelevant. A team does not win because its head coach is a motivational speaker. How is the Right Reverend Matt Rhule doing in Nebraska without a quarterback?

The problem isn't with his demeanor or his level of excitement. The problem is that he's not a very good head football coach. No amount of car salesmanship is going to change that.

Personality does matter. Aranda isn't winning games. There are many many reasons for this, and I feel that personality is one of them, though it's probably not in the top three

It's not in the top 100.

He's got a great personality. He's just not good at his job.

Cal is also a bit of a flaming dumpster. That school gives next to zero craps about football.

I think we have a receiving corp he will be able to take deep shots with.

But also as someone else said, this won't be how many plays can we run in a game spread tempo. Should be more tempo than Grimes though.
