Why Tarleton St?

Back in the day Art had to schedule teams we could hang 60 points on just to get the pollsters to notice us early in the year. But are we playing Tarleton next season for a sure win (not certain, see Tx St)? I mean can't we get a higher profile opponent like UTSA or UTEP? Maybe SFA or SHSU?

It's not at all unusual for a power conference school to have at least one non-con game like this. Last year we played Long Island University (although admittedly, they were a scramble replacement opponent because Louisiana Tech previously canceled out of a two-year deal). Anyway it happens - and given where our program is today I'm not assuming anything about that game.

Because otherwise we might not have any wins. And that's making the unwarranted assumption we can beat Tarleton.

As a side note Alabama played the 1-AA UT-Chattanooga Mocs last year.

When under Art Briles did Baylor not play an FCS team? If the answer is "never", then this comment may not be as clear as it was intended to be.

Is Tarelton not a high profile opponent? Damn it. We just hired their OC as our OL coach. This is not looking good.

I remember we played SFA, Buffalo and the like but Tarleton seems to be dipping way down for an opponent. Buts as has been stated so clearly, even that's not a slam dunk for Baylor Football 2024!

Agree, but Tarleton moved up to FCS and is in the same conference with SFA and Abilene Christian.

And, yeah, nothing is a slam dunk anymore...

I can't remember ever playing a non con game during the briles era that was of any significance always scheduled cupcakes. outside of tcu those couple of years so shout out to Mack for scheduling some good matchups in the future years

We are playing Utah and AF out of non con, that's not easy

We need an easy win to build confidence before we play the juggernaut known as Air Force

Who had no problem pushing us all over the field when we played them in our last bowl appearance.

Stop scheduling teams we can't beat, like Texas State, UTSA, and Liberty.

Because it will most likely be our single win next season. And we can't go the whole year winless

Tarleton has a ton of alumni living in the Waco area, this is their Super Bowl, we were one of the weakest P5 teams last season, and we'll be trying out our new schemes against someone who isn't our scout team.

Not only should we have scheduled Tarleton, we should have scheduled another FCS or lower lever FBS as well.

We're playing Utah and Air Force as non-con games.

J think our SOS is fine. Just Mack didn't do Dave any favors with that schedule.

Ian and Briles caught Hell for their cupcake scheduling. We are now once again a cupcake. Everybody's Homecoming game.

Why is it that cupcakes are good at the Foster Pavilion, but bad at McLane??

Ian and Briles caught hell because they scheduled nothing but cupcakes. Though I wish we wouldn't, almost everyone schedules one FCS game per year. The problem people had with Ian and Art is that we scheduled two ****ty G5 schools around that FCS school even after we got good and were trying to brand ourselves as a national title contender. We intentionally ducked competition back then, which a) is lame and b) is not a charge that can be reasonably levied against Mack and Co.

How can anybody use the term "easy win" after watching the Texas State game last year?

This strategy doesn't seem to have damaged the brand of the University of Alabama! A twelve game season comes down to attrition. Pummel your cupcake by 40 points. Get your backups some playing time. Let your starters rest and heal up.

Still hilarious to think about cupcake Liberty coming to Waco in 2017 and leaving with a W and a pile of money. Ian McCaw has never been able to get the smile off of his face.

Baylor may need the Tarleton intel from its new OL coach to avoid another early season disaster.

I am tired of the cupcake argument while we all saw what happened the moment we lost a game in conference to a non cupcake. We missed out on the playoffs.

Even now with it being 12 teams we still need to finish strong/highly ranked. One conference loss could cost us the chance to be conference champs and still miss out on the 12 team playoff.

2 losses for Baylor and we are done. No reason to schedule multiple tough non conference games.

If we are not conference champs we will still have a hard time finishing ranked high enough to be an at large bid to the playoff.

Yeah I have doubts about going 9-3 and making the cut. Can't go worse than 10-2.

Not exactly.

When Art showed up, the program was in shambles.

When your program is 1-31 in its last 32 conference games, you schedule easy OOC opponents. A lot of times these games are scheduled 5-6-7 years (or more) out.

We could not, and cannot assume we will be kicking ass 5-6-7 years in the future.

So, no. Do not schedule tough OOC opponents. It's far more likely to hurt a program like ours, than it is to benefit. Line up the Kent States and Connecticuts of the world..

Guess it depends on your idea of profile. Tarleton beat SFA by 40 last year and got beat by 40 to Tech. Really hard to gage IMO. Everyone thought low profile Jacksonville St was going to be the laughing stock of CFB last year and they finished around where Cincinatti and Houston finished.

Most of those Tarleton alums supposedly in Waco got their degree by sitting in front of a computer screen at MCC, not by cleaning out ag barns in Stephenville.

And James Madison. First year ever in FBS and they went 11-2. Granted they did not play a very tough schedule with only one P5 team (Virginia) and mostly bad to average G5 teams.

And now that Tarleton is going all in on their Fort Worth campus it won't be long before they get half or more of their alums never stepping foot on their campus.
