Woman sues BYU QB Jake Retzlaff, alleging rape, strangulation

A Utah woman has alleged that BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff raped, strangled and bit her, and that she was encouraged by Provo police not to do anything after reporting it, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Utah state court.
The woman, identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe A.G., alleges the assault took place at Retzlaff's home in November 2023.
"A year and half after the rape and strangulation, Jane Doe A.G. continues to experience extreme post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma symptoms as she works to process what happened and move on," the lawsuit states.
Retzlaff's attorney, Mark Baute, said in a statement that his client is "factually innocent."
"We look forward to proving that innocence," Baute said. "Jake's focus this year will be on football. We don't try cases in the media, we will respect the process and establish Jake's innocence through the judicial system."
Email and phone calls to a spokesperson for the BYU athletic department and the Provo Police Department seeking comment were not immediately returned.
The lawsuit says the woman and Retzlaff connected through social media in October 2023 and messaged for a few weeks before he invited her to his place on or around Nov. 22. The woman and a friend arrived at Retzlaff's home that night, where friends and teammates of Retzlaff were also present.
Later that evening, the woman's friend left, after which Retzlaff and the woman started watching a movie, the lawsuit states.
"At some point they began to kiss, but Jane Doe A.G. did not want to do anything more," the lawsuit states. "Retzlaff began escalating the situation ... and Jane Doe A.G. tried to de-escalate the situation and attempted to slow things down, trying to pull away, and saying 'wait.' She did not want to do anything sexual with him."
The lawsuit says the woman told Retlaff "no" and "wait, stop," but he continued to force himself on her. After she tried to get up out of the bed, the lawsuit alleges, in graphic detail, that Retzlaff put his hands around her neck and proceeded to rape her.
"It hurt so bad and caused so much pain that Jane Doe A.G. passed out," the lawsuit states. "Jane Doe A.G. remembers tears rolling down her face as she fought to breathe."

The woman visited the hospital a few days later, where a rape kit was performed and pictures of her injuries were taken. The lawsuit says she was connected with Provo police but did not initially share Retzlaff's name.
"At some point after speaking to the police, an officer reached out to her asking for the name because someone else filed a complaint against a football player and the police wanted to see if it was the same person," the lawsuit said. "At that point Jane Doe A.G. shared Retzlaff's name, and the Provo police then encouraged her not to do anything because, as they claimed, 'sexual assault victims never get justice.'"
Retzlaff made four starts for BYU in November 2023, and he took over as the program's starting quarterback for the 2024 season, serving as co-captain. He transferred to BYU from Riverside City College in Southern California.

Didn't BYU expel a basketball player for consensual sex years ago? Times have definitely changed if they sweep this under the rug.

If they are really serious about the evils of premarital sex, BYU will blow up their entire football program like Baylor did.

It really is amazing, with all the sexual assault scandals floating around college athletics, that not one single school has decided to handle it the way Baylor did. Boy, we were lucky to have such bold and visionary leadership.

Yeah, I know a lot of long time Baylor folks who either completely wrote them off or at least have backed way off because of that. It's just hard to trust them with much money after watching that debacle.

Actually right at about the 9th anniversary of all of that. The firings occurred the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend 2016 if I recall correctly.

I think a lot of this has to do with Baylor being about the first that had to deal with it so publicly. Everyone else has had the advantage of seeing what not to do primarily because what Baylor did by basically blowing themselves up did not produce a single iota of good PR by being proactive. So, why kill yourself. You won't get any atta-boys for doing so and you just blow up your program. Might as well sweep it under the rug and in a little while people will ignore it.

I really think had "Baylor" happened to someone else first and we were just a later incident, the outcome could have been completely different because we would have seen what not to do in handling it and that it didn't have to be he end of the world. I think to some extent we were in a mindset of past times that if something like that occurs you have to immediately and swiftly step on it in the quickest and most public way possible to save your "reputation" and do the "honorable" thing. Really unfortunately that is no longer the case in much of society.

You see it in politics all the time now. Many of the things that both parties and party individuals do today that are basically ignored after a headline or two would have been career and election killers just a few decades ago.

I was in some long meetings that day when the **** publicly hit the fan. I got out and had a barrage of texts / calls from buddies from former stages of life (grad school, prior jobs, etc) scattered about the country, mostly fans of rival B12 schools or SEC schools, saying "Y'all did what?!?!"

I agree to an extent. But lots of us knew *then* how badly we were handling it. I think Baylor's culture, having a huge board of volunteers who have their own reps at stake, and the already-present schisms from infighting made us particularly vulnerable to making it all much worse than it had to be. If this hit a governor-appointed board of 7 people at OU, they would not have been nearly as likely to eff it up the way we did. But I also agree we served as a warning to all those who came after.

I'm really glad we're all talking about what Baylor mishandled (which was clearly who was fired, and nothing else). I can't believe 9 years have passed, and this is the first time anybody is speaking out. We would have won 15 national championships in those 9 years if more people just commented on these boards with their unsolicited thoughts. Having learned all the right lessons, we can finally start the process of moving on.

Well, that's just silly. But if we hadn't ****ed that up so bad we might've won 1 or 2. Almost certainly would've hit the playoffs.

I'm always surprised that people are surprised that somebody on a Baylor sports message board might bring up the topic about how Baylor football imploded during its golden era. Sure it's been beat to death, but in just checking the front page of the site, there's literally no other discussion about Baylor sports actively going on …. It's basically a dead message board

Curse of the Bambino, Chris Webber's time out, not drafting Michael Jordan, firing Mike Leach, not giving Marshawn Lynch the ball at the one yard line…

None of them are perfect analogies, but of course those fanbases talk about those things, and countless other examples of major **** ups. They are all different and unique, ours was particularly glorious based on how badly we had to **** up so many times over such a long period of time. But they are all impressive in their own way.

I think some people for some reason just can't handle real criticism of Baylor decision makers, which I find bizarre. Maybe they find it disloyal. Maybe they want to think we never make mistakes. But of course they screw up. Everybody does. Sometimes they screw up really bad. And sometimes they can't learn to put down the shovel.

I've wondered the same. It would be nice if there was a free place to discuss Baylor sports where you wouldn't get your head bit off for stating anything that didn't keep in line with the official position of the athletic department, but the owners of the site have made sure that that's not happening anytime soon. The 247 board is also dead

Unfortunately looks like it died with baylorfans.com unless someone else picks up the mantle.

The timing of that acquisition combined with the subsequent chilling effect on certain types of opinions being expressed sure was interesting.

I dropped premium during that time period because the intolerance for dissenting views in that space was so strong. (And when I say dissenting views, I actually mean "views shared my most of the Baylor people I know across a few generations.") Was disappointing to see baylorfans.com disappear at the same time. But probably not coincidental.

BYU - Will not sweep this under the rug. If the allegations are true, he won't be playing football anymore. It is that simple. Unlike BU, BYU will take care of it, close it up, and move on.
