Auburn vs Baylor Position Group Battles & Prediction

QB Jackson Arnold (AU) vs Sawyer Robertson (Bay)
  • Edge: Auburn Arnold's dual-threat + recruiting pedigree gives him explosive upside; Robertson is steady but limited vs SEC speed.
RB Auburn backs vs Baylor backs
  • Edge: Auburn Deeper room + home-run hitters; Baylor runs into Auburn's athletic LB corps.
WR/TE Auburn WR/TE vs Baylor secondary
  • Edge: Auburn Thompson/Coleman (6'3+ freaks) overwhelm smaller Baylor corners; Preston Howard is a mismatch at TE.
WR/TE Baylor WR/TE vs Auburn secondary
  • Edge: Even (slight Auburn) Baylor's system gets yards, but Pleasant + Crawford + DB depth give Auburn proven ball-hawkers.
OL Auburn OL vs Baylor DL/Edge
  • Edge: Auburn Murphy + Chaplin upgrades bring SEC toughness; Baylor's edge unit unproven vs Power 4 fronts.
OL Baylor OL vs Auburn DL/Edge
  • Edge: Baylor (slight) 6th nationally in sacks allowed last year, but SEC trench speed is another level. Auburn's Faulk + Carter could finally expose them.
DL/Edge Auburn DL/Edge vs Baylor OL
  • Edge: Even Baylor's OL won't fold, but Auburn's edge burst is unlike anything they saw in the Big 12.
DL/Edge Baylor DL/Edge vs Auburn OL
  • Edge: Auburn Baylor's portal adds don't match SEC trench wars; Auburn OL is built for it.
LB Auburn LB vs Baylor RB/TE
  • Edge: Auburn Riddick + Wheatland = sideline-to-sideline erasers shutting down the short game.
LB Baylor LB vs Auburn RB/TE
  • Edge: Auburn Barnes is a tackling machine, but Auburn's motions/RPO seams with Howard stress coverage.
Secondary / Special Teams
  • Edge: Auburn Pleasant shores up CB, Simmons/Singleton bring explosive return threat.
Prediction

Auburn 38 Baylor 10
  • Arnold + WRs torch Baylor's DBs 23 long TDs early.
  • Pleasant + Auburn DBs create turnovers short fields.
  • Auburn DL/Edge finally overwhelms Robertson gets rattled, sacks + hurried throws.
  • Special teams spark Simmons/Singleton flip the field or score.

I guess OU forgot about that recruiting pedigree and dual threat ability when they booted his ass out the door to make room for the kid from Washington St.

Stopped reading after the comparison of Arnold and Robertson. You know we recruited Robertson from the vaunted SEC, right? And you know Arnold was bad at OU and had to transfer?

In 2024, Oklahoma ranked 14th in the SEC in pass blocking grade.

13% of Oklahoma's snaps last year ended in a sack

Oklahoma's top 5 of 6 WR's were hurt.

Through Oklahoma's 1st 9 games, they used 9 DIFFERENT combinations on their offensive line.

Oklahoma's OC Seth Littrell hadn't called plays in nearly a decade, and was fired 1/2 way though the year

1. Of the top 15 passers (by yards) in the BIG 12 last year ONLY 4 of them had a better completion % than Jackson Arnold. Jackson Arnold had a better completion percentage than Sawyer Robertson.

2. Jackson Arnold's 4-1 TD:INT ratio would've been tied for 2nd in the BIG 12 with conference champion Sam Leavitt of Arizona State. Shedeur Sanders was #1.

3. Not a single QB in the BIG 12 was under more pressure than Jackson Arnold last year in the SEC. Arnold had 40.4% pressure rate. Baylor's Sawyer Robertson had a pressure rate of only 23.5% making him the second most protected QB in the conference. Despite being MUCH better protected, Sawyer Robertson posted a slightly worse completion % with a worse TD:INT ratio than Jackson.

Sawyer transferred from Mississippi State rights after his head coach died.

Mike Leach died December 12, 2022

January 4, 2023, Robertson announced that he would be entering the transfer portal.

And yet it still didn't stop them from booting his ass out of Norman to find a replacement who is actually a winner. You guys are headed for another losing record again this year. You may as well go ahead and accept your fate now.

I grew up a tiger...bled orange until I was 40. Next 30 years I spent as a bear. I was an Auburn student and at the game when Baylor beat Auburn. Have that football program signed by Coach Teaf. Some might say from a college sports perspective that I settled for mediocrity. There too have been some very fine moments. Think Bo and RGIII. This Baylor-Auburn game has peaked my interest. Some might say I win regardless of the outcome. I've got my my tickets.

The OG is an SEC homer. Somewhat laughable and typical. I'm hopeful about the outcome though not confident nor brazen enough to spew such obvious and biased nonsense. SEC toughness? Auburn's coach has character flaws and his career may have peaked. Both are fine institutions though the one in Texas has a considerable leg up.

Let me not make bold predictions...I hope the score's not close...and the good guys from the home team are victorious! That will make my year.

Really don't get the whole smelling our own farts "SEC talent". SEC isn't some anime power up. Does Auburn have good recruits, yes, does being SEC recruits make it special? No. Can you underutilize "SEC top recruiting"? Yes look at A&M. Texas, a Big 12 team has been fighting for the top seat in SEC since they got there, and they barely won the Big 12 over the last 10 years.

Does Auburn have a lot of talent and challenges for Baylor, yes, but to sit there and pretend that just because it's "Big 12 talent" that they are somehow massively less is disingenuous, especially with the transfer portal, we literally have SEC recruits on our team and have beaten out SEC teams in recruiting battles. Robertson is an SEC transfer player, smh thinking a unproven QB is better than a proven QB just cause he's got the SEC patch on his jersey. Is it possible Arnold clicks in a new offense, sure, but to give him the edge right now over Robertson is dumb.

I'm cracking up that a Bama t-shirt fan came to our board to talk sht just out of SEC loyalty. I've been in this forum a long time and can't remember a "conference fan" coming in to talk trash.

I've got no problem with fans of the team we are playing coming in here to have some fun and talk up their team as long as they are not dcks about it...but this is funny to me.

"Sec trench speed" vs a team that went 2-6 in ACC play last year.

Really surprised at the lack of knowledge…and Venom coming from Baylor fans. Hope they're not this unfriendly in person. Maybe do a simple google search to avoid looking foolish.

Oklahoma hired Washington State's OC and QB coaches…then Jackson Arnold announced he would transfer,,,then several weeks later John Mateer announced he would transfer to Oklahoma.

In 2023, Jackson Arnold went to Oklahoma to play for Jeff Lebby. Lebby ran a balanced spread offense that mixed tempo, RPOs, and both the run and pass. After Arnold's freshman season, Lebby left to become the head coach at Mississippi State, and Oklahoma's offense changed.

Hugh Freeze's offense at Auburn in 2025 looks a lot like what Lebby was running back then. It's a flexible system that can change week to week and uses Arnold's dual-threat skills. On the other hand, Oklahoma's 2025 offense under Ben Arbuckle is more of an Air Raid style faster, pass-heavy, and less balanced.

That means Auburn's offense in 2025 is actually closer to Oklahoma's 2023 style than to Oklahoma's new 2025 system.

I'll absolutely come back. But, what if the game isn't competitive and Auburn blows out Baylor? I don't really enjoy kicking people when they're down. And, I want y'all to win every other game,

Ha! Hilarious! I very much prefer y'all being confident leading up to the game. It's boring when opposing fans say, "please don't beat us too bad." Unfortunately for Baylor, you're catching us at a really bad time. And, on top of that, the last few years and been subpar for us…so we are likely being underestimated.

We played K State in Manhattan in ~2014. They have great fans. Really enjoyed that win. They probably should have won though.

2 years ago was Hugh Freeze's 1st year at Auburn…and that followed 2 years with Brian Harsin and his disastrous recruiting.

Reason I came here to a BAYLOR forum, was to hopefully read some info…get some intel. It's pretty pard finding information on Baylor. Information on Auburn is easy to find.

1 Fanbase Size & Geography
  • Auburn is an SEC powerhouse with a massive, statewide fanbase in Alabama, plus national alumni networks. The passion and rivalry culture in the SEC drives year-round content demand.
  • Baylor has a loyal fanbase but it's smaller, more regionally concentrated around Waco, and competes for attention in Texas against Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, and pro sports teams in Dallas/Houston.
2 Conference Spotlight & TV Money
  • SEC schools like Auburn get prime-time national TV slots, huge ESPN/SEC Network coverage, and constant discussion on national sports talk shows.
  • Big 12 schools like Baylor get less guaranteed national spotlight outside of major games, so fewer national outlets dedicate resources to constant coverage.
3 Local Media Landscape
  • Auburn benefits from multiple dedicated sports reporters across statewide newspapers, AL.com, 24/7 Sports, Rivals, On3, radio stations, and fan blogsmany of which employ full-time beat writers just for Auburn.
  • In Waco, there are fewer outlets that can afford to have a full-time Baylor beat writer. With Our Daily Bears gone, it's mostly The Baylor Lariat, Waco Tribune-Herald, and local TV stationsnone of which publish multiple Baylor football articles every single day.
4 Economics of Free Coverage
  • Free sites rely on ad traffic. Auburn content gets more clicks nationally and in the Southeast, which makes it more financially viable to produce in bulk.
  • Baylor content doesn't yet draw the same national click volume, so fewer independent writers can sustain a living producing it daily without going subscription-based.

This. All the rest of the matchup opinions are invalidated. Robertson is a top 5 returning qb in the country versus someone who had to transfer because he wasn't good enough.
