We need a football first AD. Football represents ~85% of the revenue at most power 4 institutions. The only other sport that makes money is Men's basketball. Take excellent care of football with a small side of men's basketball and do what must be done for title IX (but precious little more) for all the others and things will be fine.
Women's basketball is the fastest-growing sport in America. It will be a revenue sport eventually. It should be prioritized along with football and men's basketball, though not quite to those same levels in terms of coach's pay, etc.
But I want an AD that strives for excellence in every sport we offer. Smart decisions have to be made regarding resource allocation, but I don't think we should be punting any sport. If we offer it as a varsity sport, we should be striving to compete at the highest level possible.
I don't count the temporary bump that Caitlin Clark has given the sport as a long term trend. I'll believe a women's sport is profitable when I actually see it. Until then, women will not watch sports. They'd rather watch women destroy each other on real housewives tv shows.
It's not a temporary Caitlin Clark bump. Girls and women's basketball popularity is up across all levels. The national championship game last year did 8.6 million viewers sans Clark.
Women's sports, in general, have never been more popular. Almost every sports attendance and/or TV ratings boost that has occurred since COVID has been a product of the rising popularity of women's sports. Men's sports have pretty much all either declined or remained static.
It would be really short-sighted to discount this phenomenon. Both the quality and popularity of women's sports are at an all-time high, and that's especially true in basketball, where college and pro TV deals are about to become a lot more lucrative. This surge is real ... and for good reason. There are some really damn good and entertaining players in girls and women's basketball right now. And there are several more Caitlin Clark caliber players coming up the pipeline.
I had the pleasure of watching one the last four years in Oklahoma freshman Aliyah Chavez. That girl is unreal.
