This guy does not get enough blame around here. Everyone wants to blame Linda and Dave (which is fair) but this guy does not deserve a pass at all. Frankly, he needs to be on the Rushmore of *******s along with Bliss and Steele,

Ran off the best coach we ever had.

Gave Aranda a truly stupid contract.

Fumbled the head of CFP basically the second it became relevant (and to be sure, the school and its supporters invested a lot to get him that position - completely wasted).

Alienated donors left and right.

Someone needs to be going through every email he sent, every receipt he submitted and every interaction he ever had at BU to see if there is a lawsuit to be had.

Buckle up - - - word on the street is Mack had some ridiculous buyout clause as well built into his contract. Apparently Baylor settled for $2M to get rid of him and keep down the "noise" because he is lining something up with Arizona.

I"m sorry, but this is going to be a full blown scandal at some point. The guy ran off coaches and Baylor employees, knocked boots with someone not his wife and he gets to just walk away with $$$$$. Linda is gonna find out she is getting bad advice and it's gonna cost her dearly....

The really sad part - there is no way to reset our Board and bring back the real Baylor we all learned to love and appreciate.

2 million doesn't sound bad except it is an AD position I wonder what most schools pay out to their dismissed AD on average.

All good points but I will give him a pass on running off KM. We dont need to be paying a womens bball coach that much money. That money would be better spent on football and mens bball. Him locking up Dave til 29 and not hiring Joey/JKB was his worst screw up. He hired Rhule so he shoulda known that Joey was Rhules guy since Rhule hired him.

As tired as I am of watching Dave Aranda-coached football teams and as disappointed as I am in Linda's lack of urgency with the AD/football coach positions, Mack Rhoades is, by far, the greatest villain here.

He put us in the situation we're in. Everything else is a response to the **** storm he created.

I couldn't agree more with the OP. His name should absolutely be listed with the other biggest ****bags in Baylor athletics history. By the end of all this, his decisions to hire and retain Aranda and then get his ass canned with off-the-field bull**** at a pivotal time for Baylor football will have set our program back a decade.

Everyone here blames the guy for creating a sterile, neurotic enviroment in the athletic department and for keeping Dave after 23'. Both have been disasters.

As for Dave, they've been foolish enough to pay and keep the guy in spite of the obvious.. so I can't be too mad at the guy as I wouldn't expect him to resign freely.

Ah. I forgot where I was for a moment.

You know, the Mack apologists like to blame the fallout on KM's ego. And I have no doubt that's at least part of what went down. But now you've gotta wonder ... was it really just the combination of her ego and *his* ego? Ian apparently did okay with her...

Ian just did whatever she told him to do. Make no mistake. KM was in charge. I don't think anyone could match her in ego. I guess Kiffin can give it a shot. All that said, I believe that if it had not been LSU, she would still be here, Mack or not. That was just too good of an opportunity to go home.

Problem is the real Baylor that I learned to love and appreciate was crappy in football and just about everything else. I was here in the late 60s. Baylor is like everything else that has occurred in athletics....money has ruined it all.

man to the moon (allegedly), that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour (have heard it might have been the Germans), or that Michael Jackson is dead (allegedly)

Also, I am not chick ball person at all, but KM seems pretty objectively to be the best coach Baylor has ever had in any sport. But whatever, i don't want to step on the Briles' folks' toes .... how about legendary, future HOF coach instead?

I'm going play som devils advocate here. In all of Mack's shortcomings, including his affair, he did not leave amidst a national scandal.

For the rest:

Ran off the best coach we ever had. Largely agreed, you do not lose a living Hall of Fame coach that has survived multiple ADs. The party line has been "Kim fired herself", "Kim was tyrant", "We are better off", but I don't really believe any of these and frankly can excuse some of it because she wins championships. It is unclear to me if she was let go because of the ego clash or if this was business/economics decision. I've been told it wasn't economics, but that is frankly the only avenue where he departure makes sense from an AD budget management perspective. WBB is a money loser and Kim makes a lot.

Gave Aranda a truly stupid contract. Aranda received an extension following the Sugar Bowl win. If he panned out, we would lauding the forward thinking of Mack Rhoades. If he panned out and hadn't gotten the extension, he would gone to greener pastures and we would be asking Mack what happened. I'm fine with the extension, I don't support doubling/tripling/quadrupling down on Dave when it was clear he wasn't the guy in 2023.

Fumbled the head of CFP basically the second it became relevant (and to be sure, the school and its supporters invested a lot to get him that position - completely wasted).
No kidding. They always wait until the brightest lights before they piss down their legs.

Alienated donors left and right. Agreed.

I would also add:

Mismanagement of the tailgates and gameday experiences.

Failure of marketing after the national championship in Basketball and the Sugar Bowl win.

General failure in marketing to ticketholders and consumers.

Branding failures between the green bay packers unis and the "bluebonnet battle" for the TCU games.

Decline of the women's basketball team and baseball team.

Mishandling of initial NIL philosophy and approach.

I get that almost everything in college athletics changed under his tenure but it isn't hard to argue that the programs are in a worst state than we he found them.

7 year extension was ridiculous, especially when we don't have the buy out money (which we don't). LSU just paid a $37m buyout on top of $13m/year. The idea he wouldn't have gone to greener pastures because he had a long term contract is bupkis.

Mulkey was the second highest paid WBB coach at that time and had the highest program budget in the nation. Geno Auriemma only coach making more (barely). He had 11 NCs at the time, she had 3. Again, her budget was larger than his.

One coach in athletic department fought COVID cost control measures…..Mulkey. One coach then badmouthed COVID competition…..Mulkey. One coach publicly fought to have baseball lose budget to increase her budget……Mulkey. One coach tried to leverage an assistant coach's scandal for her benefit…..Mulkey. One coach went over her boss's head to President constantly…. Mulkey. One coach went over President's head to BOR constantly…..Mulkey. One coach kept undermining CSD at every turn…..Mulkey. One coach had a Go To move of creating false conflict and outrage in one area to gain leverage in another area……Mulkey.

Mulkey would have been gone two years earlier but won the NC. People were done with her. Total organizational cancer.

Rhoades f'ed up many things. Drawing a line in the sand with a malcontent like Mulkey was not one of those items.

Blaming Mack for "running off" Kim Mulkey is giving him way to much credit. No one ran off Kim Mulkey she decided to leave for way more money and better NIL situation at LSU. She knew in this new era that she had a way better chance to win another National Championship at LSU than at Baylor. She also did a good job of making it look like she had some sort of disagreement with Mack and that they didn't see eye to eye, yada yada. She was doing a PR move. She is very smart, Mack is just a big huge dumbass
Grumpy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The university is currently bleeding money and currently forcing academic units and departments to cut 10 to 12% of their budgets (although the school is run by a former accounting professor). So if Baylor actually paid Rhoades an extra $2M to leave quietly, after behavior that rose to the level of termination for cause, that is especially rich and ridiculous.
