Just back from watching today's introduction press conference. What most caught my eye?

When I started watching, it had been viewed about 1900 times. When it ended, the view count had risen to 2106 times.

When I started watching it, there were 28 likes. When I finished, there were 28 likes.

To me, it was a litany of good questions responded to with talking points, dodging, and trite expressions.

Is it up on YouTube?

Yes. It's the longest version--52 minutes or so.

Now that we have a Baylor man as AD, we can replace Linda with the Dean of Truett Seminary.

Then, maybe we can hire a great defensive mind with no prior head coaching experience at any level aa our head football coach.

You see where all this goes?

read through the comments, not terribly surprised.

I'll go on record saying it's going to be a terrific hire.

1- I know Doug fairly well, deep down he will cut you to win. Ultra- competitive and he will work tirelessly to make Baylor athletics better. And he absolutely knows football is king.

2- He gets marketing and revenue. He's not afraid to pick up the phone and ask for money from anyone and everyone. I've spoken to a lot of wealthy donors about this and the ones I spoke to already have strong connections with him and are ready to give and support his vision.

3- Scott Drew wanted him and pushed hard for him. Athletics has changed. The most important part of the job now is raising money and finding revenue streams to fund NIL and getting ROI on every expenditure. He understands this. He will take a version of DOGE to Baylor athletics and cut out all the waste and get a department that is lean and mean.

4- He understands we are in the entertainment business. Of course, winning cures all. But he was on staff for the Briles era. He knows what made it successful and he will attempt to get back to that "vibe". The quote about making sure it is a good experience... of course he knows wins is what creates a good experience. But that's out of his control every single game. He's going to control what he can control and try to get the best coaches for Baylor and make sure they have the resources to succeed.

Watch his presser and give him a chance. I've been critical of Linda's decision to send out that letter and retain Aranda for another year. But I give her props for making this decision. It was certainly not the conventional one. I would have been happy with Dickey or McNamee but I think she made the riskier and higher return potential move. He's a Baylor guy through and through.

Doug might very well turn out to be a sneaky great hire. He's a Baylor Bear, knows Waco and the surrounding communities, and has/had strong connections with administration within the school, alumni, donors, the BOR, and Foundation members. Then, Mack Rhoades ran him off (like Mack ran off many others in the athletic department).

Doug did special, little things for me and my family as we were on boarding to the Foundation and multi-sport season tickets many years ago. I could call, text, or email him directly, and he answered/handled every single call/text/email himself. No delegation, no distancing. For my mid-tier contributions and support, I felt directly connected to and appreciated by Baylor Athletics leaders. He got it then, and still gets it today I am sure.....

That, of course, all slowly deteriorated away over the years under Mack Rhoades. Mack ran off much of the talent in the athletic department, and turned the whole show into the Mack Rhoades circus rather than making it about students, alumni, boosters, and fans. After many years, I made the decision to walk away from all season tickets and financial support of Baylor Athletics about 4 years ago when it was clear (at least to me and most) Mack was running Baylor Athletics into the ditch of irrelevance.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what Doug does turning around Baylor Athletics. I believe this hire brings a fresh excitement from alumni, boosters, and fans having him in the seat. All of the other ex-boosters I personally know feel the same way.

The head football coach position will be his first major statement; I am looking forward to that first major move.

Agreed.

McNamee wasn't my choice for AD, but he said the right things in his press conference yesterday.

It was clear that winning is important to him, and this quote was more in reference to the little things that happened under his predecessor's watch that chipped away at the fan experience during sporting events.

There are a few things McNamee said yesterday that tell me he really understands what he's stepping into and the hurdles he'll have to clear in this role.

The biggest one obviously is NIL fundraising, but that's a given for every P4 program right now, so it's not really worth discussing in depth. He'll either improve our NIL operation or he won't, and we won't see the results of that for a little while.

But one of the things I really liked about his press conference was the time he spent talking about the Baylor fanbase as a whole and the importance of rank-and-file fans. It was beyond clear under Mack Rhoades that if you weren't a big donor, you didn't matter. McNamee seems to be intentional about mending those broken fences.

I also liked that McNamee's primary -- and perhaps only -- priority is making sure Baylor athletics are successful. Rhoades had his fingers in a lot of different pies and was involved on a lot of committees that seemed at times to take his focus and attention away from his primary job as Baylor's AD. I didn't get the impression that would be an issue with McNamee.

I was vocal in my distaste for this hire, and I'm still not completely sold, but I'm much more open now to the possibility of it succeeding than I was previously. I'll definitely give McNamee a shot to enact his vision for the program and see how it works out.

We don't know until we know.

I get it. I'm a very cynical guy myself. The first reaction on this would likely to be what it is barring signing some guy with a load of championship football trophies on the wall and his own beer distribution company.

Not unexpected considering the total beatdown of news we have had this year, on top of the semi-regular beatdowns we have received as Baylor fans over the years.

We are battered fans with PTSD.

Hopefully, we are in the beginnings of an upswing again toward lots of success before the next kick in the balls down the road.

Put me down for totally against the hire but quickly moving to cautiously optimistic.

I think it is obvious he intends to change the direction of the ADs office. If it doesn't add value to the product on the field/court/diamond or, if it doesn't add value for the fans, it's not worth doing and needs to go away.

Is he willing to fire friends in the athletic department?

Can he put together a quality search committee for coaches in a variety of sports?

This may have already been posted, but for all the grief Dr. Linda Livingstone has received from many regarding this hire and her actions over the past few weeks, I remind everyone that she was on the 3-person Executive Committee who brought Brett Yormark onboard. It has proven to be a forward-thinking and savvy hire. The Big 12 could have easily dissolved without Yormark's extraordinary moves.

Unless you joined Baylor nation within the past 8 years, , nothing about any of this is unprecedented. There is actually nothing more stare decisis regarding Baylor than right now.

I get that you really hoped a new AD was going to fire Dave...but just because that didn't happen doesn't mean we aren't now making progress towards recovery.

Doug is not Tom Stanton 2.0. Doug has both an educational and professional background in athletics administration. AFAIK Tom did not specialize in that in either bachelor's or grad school, and he certainly had no professional experience. Doug's resume is far better than Tom's on that front.

Further, Tom's fatal mistake was a bad hire, not complete incompetence in every facet of the job. That mistake is why Baylor relies on search committees and headhunters in 2025 - as Grunt Tuff has posted, Doug won't be solely responsible for a coaching hire in any sport, at least certainly not the football or basketball teams.

But I understand the deja vu induced nausea - because Tom was a 'Baylor guy' too, and both he and Doug have been touted for their 'marketing experience'.

But I'd say they had very different corporate experiences: Tom worked for one organization until coming to Baylor - Doug has continued to grow professionally and has succeeded in multiple sectors.

If we actually limp through next season with a 7-5 record or worse and Dave is retained, I will put on sackcloth and cover myself in ashes. But I'll be shocked if that happens - to quote Cyclone Larry: I'll taze my own nuts.
