State of the Program

If you are reading this, you are well aware of the crossroads this program faces and the temperature of Dave Aranda's seat as he enters Year 7 leading the Baylor football program. This time last year, Baylor fans had dreams of competing for the conference championship and a spot in the CFP.

Last season began with a great opportunity in a great environment, on national television, to defeat a national SEC brand. That squandered chance turned into a foreshadowing of the season to come. Inconsistent play, flashes of greatness and ineptitude from the players and staff, sleepwalking through quarters and halves, untimely injuries, and more led to a highly disappointing 5-7 season.

Virtually everyone thought that the Dave Aranda era had come to a merciful end. He played every card that he ever had, with every excuse for each of his missteps finally exhausted; it was time to move on. By a stroke of great personal luck, Mack Rhoades and his personal life cost him his job as AD, and Aranda was spared due to the chaos of the timing of the AD's dismissal. (Side note: I can't think of anyone who benefited more from ADMR dismissal than Aranda. Someone more conspiratorial might think someone from his camp leaked that dirt at the exact right time.)

There is another change at Defensive Coordinator as Joe Klanderman comes over from Kansas State, where he put together solid-to-very good defensive units. We will see if he has the time and personnel to improve a dreadful unit.

Jake Spavital returns at Offensive Coordinator with some high-upside pieces. His unit will likely need to put up 30+ points again for this team to compete weekly. His challenge is replacing almost the entire starting offensive lineup while counting on an eligibility ruling and favorable injury luck.

Roster Outlook

From a poor 2025 team, the Bears lost their best: QB, RB, WR, TE, LB, 4/5 OL, DL. Aranda is supplementing the roster with the #36/58-ranked Transfer Portal class and the #55/53-ranked 2026 HS class.

The obvious gem and reason for hope for this season is the Prodigal Son, DJ Lagway. He's been on the radar of Baylor fans for the better part of five years due to his rise to elite prospect and the obvious connection with his father. The ceiling of this season likely rests on the arm of Lagway and whether the retooled OL can keep him upright.

A crucial piece to this roster and the floor/ceiling of this team is going to come down to the eligibility of DL Hosea Wheeler and OL Yakiri Walker. If they are cleared, that raises the depth and experience level in the trenches significantly.

Schedule

9/5 @Auburn (Atlanta)
9/12 PVA&M
9/19 LA Tech
9/26 Colorado
10/3 @Arizona St.
10/17 TCU
10/24 @Kansas
10/30 @UCF
11/7 Iowa St.
11/14 @BYU
11/21 TTU
11/28 @UH

The temperature of the fan base and Aranda's seat is going to swing wildly either way with the result of Week 1 against Auburn. CDA can do a lot for himself and the momentum of the program if he can go into SEC country and get a win on national television.

Finishing the year is seemingly the most difficult part of the schedule, but this is the Big 12 and preseason predictions rarely play out accurately.

Advanced Ratings and Odds

Forward Looking

There is a severe apathy and lack of momentum in all aspects of the program as it currently stands. I am hopeful that the new Athletic Director, Doug McNamee, will improve the overall gameday and fan experience. His "Give A ****" for the fanbase already appears to be much higher than his predecessor. If Baylor is going to be able to compete in the current/future landscape of college football, I think that Doug gives us the best chance at raising the necessary funds and engaging + aligning the fanbase.

His job gets a whole lot easier if Aranda can put together a team that looks prepared, energized, consistent, and wins at a high level this season. If Aranda cannot do that, then ADDM has the opportunity to swing for the fences and rebuild the program and fanbase as he sees fit.

My View

I have a hard time picturing a team that went 5-7 last season and lost all of their major contributors, either to graduation or the Transfer Portal, improving greatly. There was one major splash addition to the roster between the portal and high school ranks, and that is DJ Lagway. I am not convinced that he is going to step in and be much more productive than Sawyer Robertson was last year. Not to mention he has to do it with an entirely new group of linemen and skilled players.

If this is the offseason that Aranda figured out how to evaluate and build a complete roster, then I would be happily surprised. He has been unable to do so since 2021 and seems to be at least one major step behind each and every season.

The schedule appears to be one of the most difficult in the conference, which will not help the W-L record. If Baylor goes into Atlanta and defeats Auburn, I could see them winning 9+ games. If it looks like the same inconsistent team, this will be a long season. Prediction: 5-7

The college football landscape has undoubtedly changed, and there are several challenges that exist now that haven't previously been there for Baylor.

Guy Morriss was fired after not being able to put together a winning season, and he had the worst facilities in the conference with minimal organizational support. He was also competing in a conference with Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Nebraska, among others.

Dave Aranda has premier facilities, competes in a weaker conference, has the most fertile recruiting ground, highly paid assistants, and a program with a history of winning conference championships and producing first-round draft picks.

There are no more excuses to be made. There needs to be immediate results this year.

When even the most optimistic Baylor homers and Aranda defenders, who spent multiple years and thousands of message board posts, have turned on him as the leader of this program, you know that the odds aren't great of him returning in 2027.

Simply put, Baylor is sitting firmly behind all of our chief in-state rivals: TCU, Tech, SMU, Houston.

There are several exciting coaches that are easily attainable for Baylor to target, and several more will appear throughout the season. Among them: Jason Eck, Charles Huff, Brian Newberry, Spencer Danielson, Chris Kleiman, etc.

If it comes to be, I look forward to an exciting coaching search and a unification of the fanbase so that we can be excited about Baylor football once again.

Key Questions:
  • What is your prediction for Baylor's record?
  • What record does Dave Aranda need to keep his job?
  • If he is fired, who should Baylor target?
  • What do you want to see out of Baylor football?

I agree with most of what you say and 5-7 is reasonable.

This should be Dave's last season.

I have us at 4-8 because 1 of ISU,UCF, KU or CU will figure out how to win against this team.

What is your prediction for Baylor's record?

5 @Auburn (Atlanta) (loss)
9/12 PVA&M (win)
9/19 LA Tech (win)
9/26 Colorado (win)
10/3 @Arizona St. (loss)
10/17 TCU (loss)
10/24 @Kansas (win)
10/30 @UCF (loss)
11/7 Iowa St. (tossup)
11/14 @BYU (loss)
11/21 TTU (loss)
11/28 @UH (loss)

Overall record 5-7. The usual excuses get made about injuries , budget, and how we have a couple high school recruits that are totally gonna turn things around for us (who both end up flipping to an SEC/Big Ten school before signing day), blah blah blah.

At that point, I'd say there probably will be a 70% chance he gets fired, but a 30% chance the administration decides to bring him back because of the aforementioned reasons. Doug is not calling the shots on firing him, the money has to be there, and Linda and the BOR have to sign off on it. Aranda is a good project manager off the field that knows how to remain businesslike in interviews and doesn't get involved in politics, religious , or social issues, and that goes a long way with the people calling the shots at Baylor.

What record does Dave Aranda need to keep his job?

I think six wins will keep him his job. Linda said in an interview at the end of the 2023 season after the loss to Air Force that making it to a bowl game is considered a successful season at Baylor. That's the standard

I will list three realistic candidates that I think would take the job. I like the coach at Boise State, but he's got a great situation there, and I seriously doubt we'd be able to hire him away.

Jason Eck, New Mexico: 2025 Mountain West Coach of the Year; led New Mexico to its first bowl appearance since 2016 in his first FBS season.

Sean Lewis, San Diego State: Turned Kent State into a bowl team, one of college football's most innovative offensive minds, engineered a 9-4 turnaround at SDSU in 2025 after a 3-9 debut season. Runs a high octane, no huddle offense and could potentially start getting more hype if he has a good year this year

Brian Newberry, Navy: Two consecutive bowl victories, 10-3 and 11-2 seasons after a 5-7 debut, restored Navy to national relevance.

I've done a fair amount of digging on all three of these guys and have watched YouTube clips, etc. They all bring a lot of energy and toughness to the table which I think our program is lacking.

I'm not under the delusion that the coach is going to be able to take moderate p5 talent and turn them into a playoff caliber team. However, I expect us to be able to go toe to toe with every team not named Texas Tech and BYU. I expect players to show up in the first quarter and not look lost and tired. I expect to not lose multiple games by last second Hail Marys. I expect us to be able to create some sort of niche to establish a team culture and brand

The OP is IMO a good and accurate assessment. I hate that 6 wins and an invitation to a who cares bowl is allegedly deemed a "successful" season and worthy of a HC keeping his job for another season.

If Dave had that kind of guile, I think he'd be better at his job.

I'd guess 4-8 sight unseen right now. Biggest factors are Klanderman, rebuilt OL, and can we re-load the receiving corps? That is to say, all sorts of things might happen.

I think that's a great list. Will be tough to snag any of those guys if they have similar success this season.

Dave's seat is hot and expectations are low so that means he's going to win 8+ games.

Then expectations will be high for the 2027 season and he will fall flat on his face again.

Thats how it goes with Aranda-ball. We can't shake this guy off of us.

The cynic in me hears what you say.

I just do not see 8 wins from our team. Unless Lagway is Superman.

There's a sentiment on the paid board that he has to win 9+ games to keep his job but I just cannot see Baylor firing an 8-4 coach

yeah, there's no way he has to win 9

Anything 6-6 or better (meaning any bowl game) and Dave stays around. As mediocre as that may be, that has to be the bar with the new regime based on everything I've seen from them. Maybe new AD Doug fires CDA for 6-6 to prove he's a badass that won't tolerate mediocrity, but I just don't see it at this point.

Nine wins would get him another extension

I would go a step further and say that if he can win two between Texas Tech, Auburn, TCU, and BYU, just two between those four, they will keep him, even if we somehow finish 5-7. No doubt in my mind.
MRPorter7635

I think he is gone at 7-5 or worse. No matter where the wins come from.

I want him gone no matter what. He could have a successful season but we know what he is.

Time to move on.

I'm with you. My issue with Dave at this point is that any success this season can be explained by something other than his coaching. If the defense takes a big step forward, the credit will mostly go to Klanderman. If the offense looks great, it points to Lagway simply being the real deal.

At this stage, I don't think there's any realistic outcome this season that would convince me Dave has suddenly figured it out in Year 7. Whatever happens, there will almost certainly be a more plausible explanation than a sudden breakthrough as a head coach. 2025 was his last chance to trampoline off of momentum from the previous season, and he failed

There is not a single solitary chance in hell that he wins two of those four.

I still think a 6 win season probably gets him retained.

I think Baylor is broke and not that passionate about winning. If he goes 7-5 or 8-4, I don't think there's any way in hell he gets fired. I think there's a good chance that 7-6 keeps him around.

i could see 8-4 (not saying i like it but i could see it). no way 7-5 though. doug knows the fans, and i trust he'll make the right move.
