So I hear RG3 described as a bust in the NFL every so often, but he was NFC Rookie of the Year I believe .... proving he had what it took to be a solid, contributing player in the League. What derailed his career, as far as I've always believed, is 1. After his rookie seson he got stuck with a coach that did not like him/want him and 2. Injuries. So, what's the deal? Is RG3 an NFL bust or not?

Yes, he was a bust in the NFL. I don't think that can really be debated. Now, we can talk all day about the reasons why: his injury, a coaching staff they didn't know how to use him, not having tons of talent around him, etc. In my opinion, a lot of what happened is that NFL defenses adjusted to his play style, and he struggled to make his own adjustments. It's not uncommon for a quarterback to look good during their rookie year and then come back to earth once teams adjust to them. It's no shame to be a bust in the NFL. The fact that he worked his way to being a number two pick (and would've been a number one pick if not for a generational prospect in Andrew luck) was really a testament to how good he was. Guy made good money and has been a solid ambassador for us.

Rookie of the Year and led Redskins to playoffs, playing despite significant injury, reinjured and never same. Still kept in NFL multiple years.

Successful in broadcasting now.

Many parents wish their sons were a "bust" like that.

A winner.

I don't think he was a bust. It shows how important coaching and organizations are. I believe that had he gone to Seattle, he'd have had Russell Wilson's career.

Good points, and I agree. He is one of those unfortunate highly talented athletes that just couldn't avoid the injury bug over the long haul and it highly impacted and eventually played a major role in ending his NFL career.

Yes and no. Yes because of a very short career being a number one draft choice. No because he was rookie of the year on a down trodden team and he did make $33,000,000 playing football. Good for him. He is still in the game making money.

Not a bust. His coach ruined his career by continuing to play him in a playoff game when he had a serious injury at the end of his rookie season. A real coach would have pulled him out so, knowing he was already done for the game, giving RG3 and the Redskins many good years to follow (potentially). Instead, his coach left him and the injury even worse. RG3 was never the same after that game.

A bust, IMHO, is a player that was great in college, but never showed the ability to step his game up at the pro level. You don't get Rookie of the Year as a bust!

Not an entire bust. He took the Redskins the playoffs in his rookie year and was named Rookie of the Year.

To me he's just a bust in the sense that he went #2 overall as a franchise QB #1, but because of his injuries, he never became that for the franchise.

At the same time, part of the reason that he was injured as often as he was was due to poor protection. At the same time, the Skins pulled the reigns on RG3 trying to get the most they could out of him in the process. The problem is that RG3 isn't great because he is a pocket passer; he is great because he can get out of the pocket. Well, you need an offense that features that and some hogs to block for you.

The Redskins didn't have that during the RG3 era.

And yes, he was left in too long injured at the end of his rookie season.

He was a bust, but one that you could see coming. If you watched him at Baylor, you would have noticed the physical issues (concussions and knees) building. There is a significant difference in physical requirements between Big 12 and NFL.

I agree that Art should have a statue at the stadium. No way it would have been built had he not completely turned the program around.

I think McLane would've been built anyway; it was Guy Morriss that got the ball rolling for an on-campus stadium & pointed out to the Baylor 'powers that be' at the time how lacking their athletic facilities were. It was pretty inevitable that BU would be ditching Baylor Stadium and moving back to campus.

RGIII was an NFL bust. A bust in sports refers to a highly touted athlete, usually a top draft pick, who fails to meet the high expectations and hype placed upon them. These players often struggle to transition to the professional level or fall short due to injuries, poor development, or off-field issues.

Highly touted--check. Top draft pick--check. Fell short due to injuries--check. Couldn't develop from a mobile QB to a pocket QB--check.

Injuries were probably the biggest reason for him being a bust. Year one was definitely not a bust, but he wasn't signed to a one-year deal when he was drafted.

RG3, much as I love him, was unfortunately a bust. Brilliant rookie year. I've seen people try to retcon his rookie year, saying that actually, Andrew Luck should have won ROTY, but all that tells me is that they didn't watch RG3 play at all. He was ELECTRIC. Game and paradigm changing.

But he's always been injury-prone. He never learned to protect himself, and he always took way bigger hits than guys with less athleticism, but more wiggle (Russell Wilson, Pat Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, etc.) take.

Ironically, I have taken to calling Jayden Daniels "RG4" because I see the same traits in him. Insane athletic skills, game breaking speed and arm, but no ability to avoid a big hit. I hope for his sake that Washington has better systems in place to protect his career, but they're a ****ty franchise, and ****ty franchises don't magically change overnight (see: Browns, Cleveland and Jets, New York).

In closing, I love Robert Griffin III. I hope nothing but success for him personally and professionally. But he was not a success in the NFL, given his draft position and hype.

I wouldn't call someone whose career was effectively ended by injury a bust. JMO. All we're doing is arguing definitions.

He was rookie of the year and made the pro bowl in 2012. Injuries (exacerbated by the poor coaching decision to play him when he was obviously hurt) effectively took him off the field and turned him into a long-term backup. He still hung around in the league for 8 years.

Unlike most "busts", Robert proved he could play in the NFL at a high level. Yes, I think injuries one on top of the other derailed his career. Mobile QB's typically don't last in the NFL long.

Compared to other busts who never proved they could play at that level - Manziel, nearly any Cowboy 1st round pick, etc.

15th Anniversary of RG3's Heisman win this year (2011-2026).......Perfect time to have him back on campus and honored at a game. The Tcu game on Oct 17th would be my pick.

BU Gameday/Marketing people get on it....chop chop

Even so, if the program had continued to languish at the level it was at when Guy Mo was HC, it's hard to see McLane actually happening or at least happening when it did. Both CAB and RGIII were critical in jump starting getting McLane built -especially CAB, because without him there would've never been an RGIII.

At Baylor, nothing is inevitable in terms of athletics.
Without Briles' unprecedented success a new stadium in a new location (on campus) is highly unlikely.

Groundbreaking for McLane was in Sept 2012; that was before "Briles' unprecedented success", but about 10 months after RG3's Heisman win. Like I said, Guy Morriss got the ball rolling on what turned out to be McLane Stadium.

I love Guy Morriss, but he did originate the idea of lets have an on-campus stadium.

It takes money. Briles & RGIII made that happen. Morriss deserves no credit, to be honest.

SMH

Morriss floated the idea in 2003 (give or take) when he was hired and was living the reality of Baylor's sh:tty facilities compared to UT, Aggy, Oklahoma, Nebraska, i.e. conference teams he had to compete with. Baylor probably didn't have money at that time, reason why it took 9 years to break ground. Guy Morriss deserves a lot of credit, in reality, for the existence of McLane Stadium. You can believe what you want, but that's the truth.
