Dave Aranda

I envy him. At the end of the day, there's not a single person in the world that would turn down a job where you make 5 million/year, are terrible at what you do, and have untouchable job security on top of a very vocal contingent on the Internet that will go to bat for you and make excuses to defend your job performance.

Like, could you imagine going to your office job and handing your boss some halfway done report or whatever at the end of the week, and your boss's reaction is, "you know what. The vibes and the energy are good. Don't worry about it"

Walter Payton.

I've liked a lot of guys. Maybe admired, but for me, Payton was different. It's hard for me to say Barry Sanders is the best back I've ever seen because of my feelings for Payton.

Sorry about that. The sad thing is, I did not make that up out of thin air. Doug said in an interview a couple days back that he's less concerned about the number of wins and more concerned about seeing good vibes with the program.

In this case I hope he is like most ADs and talks out of both sides of his mouth.

Maybe he'll give him the dreaded vote of confidence

LOL! I was about to add Edwin to my list, but I already had two track guys on it. He owned the hurdles for years, and he was a bad ass

Tom Landry and Roger Staubach are at the top. The Cowboys were my first sports passion, and they were amazing examples of how to behave as a professional. They were also brilliant minds on and off the field, and such high character people. And Roger was such a badass. Randy White is up there, too, because he was so intense, smart, tenacious and immensely prepared.

Singletary, of course, and Grant Teaff. Not the winningest coach ever, but he did things the right way and cared about his team and his players like nobody else. There weren't many coaches that could have done more with Baylor in that era, if any. Lots of Baylor players and athletes are up there as well, like Michael Johnson, a bunch of others I'm not going to spend time listing.

Jack Nicklaus, because he was stone cold in the big tournaments, and could never be counted out .Also such a great guy, analytical and brilliant as well as physically talented for the game. And I was never much of a golf guy, but those rivals in the 70s were unbelievable and deep, like many sports of that era. He was a legend among legends.

Character means a ton to me. It's a shame it doesn't to some other folks.

Sports used to be a great source of inspiration through character, not just physical talent. It doesn't seem so much a thing as it once was.

Character is still a big thing for lots of people but, it doesn't get the airtime it once did.

I think the greatest character athlete I'm aware of is Tim Tebow. Between his Night to Shine and battle against child trafficking, I can't think of anyone that has used their platform in a more positive way.

I'm a big "shut up and entertain me" guy but Tebow just decided to give up entertaining people so he could make a difference for less fortunate people.

Me and a few buddies tried to cut through his yard and he raced out and caught us - - ended up shooting some hoops at the house until my father showed up.

I had the same glove with Mickey's sig on it. I had that glove until I was in my late 50's when we moved. I blame my wife for tossing it in the "giveaway pile" ; I was crushed. I do still have my J.R. Richard glove though!

Golf = Calvin Peete or Lee Trevino (poor, self-taught minorities with no pedigree. Calvin played with an un-fixed broken arm)
Football = Earl Christian Campbell (power, speed and he left it all on the field)
Basketball = Larry Bird (the trash talking was priceless and he could back it up)
Baseball = Nolan Ryan (7 full-game no hitters)
Horseracing = Rich Strike (85 to 1 wins the derby out of nowhere. Never won again.)

I blame my wife too for losing mine too. She just didn't realize what that glove meant to me and also tossed it the last time we move 20 years ago.
