I think DJ played a great game yesterday, but I was reminded of something about Aranda that I do not like at all.

Just a short history:

In 2022, Blake Shapen was injured against WV, but Aranda put him back in as soon as possible, giving little opportunity for Kylon Drones, the back-up. There is no evidence Aranda ever planned to have Drones develop;

In 2023, Blake Shapen was injured against Texas State, he returned three weeks later against the recommendation of doctors. Sawyer Robinson, the backup QB, played well but was held back in favor of Shapen, even though Shapen's injury was a big part of the 3-9 season;

In 2024, Sawyer Robinson was injured against TCU, but Aranda continued to use him, rejecting the back-up Dequan Finn;

And yesterday, we saw DJ Lagway get hurt but continue to play, with Cade Tessler back-up not seeing even one snap.

Aranda has a bad habit of relying on his starting QB even after they get hurt, and not doing much of anything to develop back-up quarterbacks.

This is at best irresponsible and dangerous.

It was the right call to leave DJ in, unless the backup has been some kind of superstar in fall camp.

If DJ plays much these next two weeks--that would be negligence. We need him rested up for conference.

In the NIL era, you're paying guys to play, and you don't know if you'll have them the next year.

You're not going jeopardize anyone's long-term health, but if it's a pain-tolerance thing and you think they're going to be more effective than your backup, get them on the field and keep them out there. I'm all for sitting guys in meaningless games against FCS or bad G6 teams. But if it's a meaningful game and these guys can go, I want the guys we're paying to be impact players making an impact.

For Prairie View, yes, but La Tech is prolly going to at least be enough of a challenge that we won't be able to afford to do that unless of course Lagway just can't go.

Do not underestimate just how important a "W" was yesterday to Aranda. He absolutely needed a Baylor win, no matter what. So, I understand leaving Lagway in......and besides......it looked to me like he could go anyway so I was good with Lagway playing. Yesterday was a Win At All Costs for Aranda.

But what Aranda didn't compensate for, and ultimately cost him the L in the end, was HIMSELF. His poor game management abilities and routinely poor calls/decisions on situational 4th Downs cost him in the end.......just like they have his entire tenure as a head coach.

His decisions to make the much higher risk % decision in this game to go for it on 4th down when 3 points was there to be had were especially frustrating given how well our D was playing and given that points were at a premium in this one. In the past, I have at least somewhat understood his otherwise seemingly nonsensical decisions to go for it in the red zone on fourth down because FGs mean very little when you have crap for a defense but that clearly wasn't the case in this game and it obviously ended up costing us. And yes, I realize our first FG attempt looked about like one of us on this board was trying to kick it, but I don't see the logic in letting one botched attempt cause Aranda to forego FG attempts, especially when the percentages clearly say that's what you should do.

Tessier, Griffin, and Murphy have all not played a single snap of college football, and Bennett has never looked better than mediocre, even against Samford last year, he couldn't complete a pass. I think Aranda didn't have an option for a backup that could win us the game. so while I sound insane, I think Aranda made the right choice there

Maybe even just a quarter or so if the game is totally under control. Backups need experience anyway. But Aranda hasn't really emphasized that during his tenure.

Aranda's negligence of Qbs pales in comparison to what Matt Rhule did to Charlie Brewer for 2 years. And not to sound callous, but these are highly paid professional athletes today. They are commodities and we pay dearly for their services. All part of playing big boy football.
