We were so lucky in the late 70's and early 80's to get 7pm kickoffs.
Then college football exchanged fan experience for TV money.
BU's rule of thumb "back in the day" (late 60s-mid 70s) was night home games September and October, day games November and December, unless we happened to be on TV. The only September day games I can remember from back then were Syracuse in 1966 (national TV; I was too young to attend) and Houston in 1976 (regional ABC TV).
In 1977 and 1978, BU played all home games during the day. The word was it was to save on energy costs of running the stadium lights. We opened the 1977 at home against Tech (don't remember if it was televised or not), and it was 103 at kickoff. I don't recall any of the other 1977 games being that brutal, even the next week when we beat Kentucky in Waco. We only had 4 home games in 1978, and the first one wasn't until we played UH in early October. Finally we went back to September night games in 1979 against Lamar and A&M, but Tech in late September was a day game.
My 4 years at BU were 1980-83, and most early games were at night. First day game in 1980 was HC vs. Arkansas in November (11am kick for ABC); in 1981 it was A&M in mid-October. The 1982 UH game was 11am TV, and I found a party pic from after that game with my then GF and her parents and all of us were red-faced and sunburned. By 1983, the Tech game in late September was daytime for TV, but the Aggy game 3 weeks later was at night, also for TV.
By 1984, the NCAA had lost its Supreme Court case over broadcast rights, and Raycom started televising SWC games that weren't picked up by ABC, so games could be at all hours.
