The Dave Aranda problem

I'm not sure if this thread is necessary or not, but I was having a conversation with my Baylor fan text group this morning about the near impossible situation Dave Aranda faces this season and thought I'd share my thoughts here as well.

Before I start, let me state in no uncertain terms that this problem was self-inflicted -- Dave did it to himself by allowing our program to reach the depths he did. And our athletic administration exacerbated it by forcing him once again upon a fan base that is largely ready to move on without him. So if your first inclination is to point those things out, save yourself the effort. I agree. We all agree.

Now to the point of the thread and why lame duck seasons like this one are almost always a mistake. They put the sitting coach in a no-win season where even winning at a respectable level isn't enough to undo years of bad will.

I think under most circumstances, a 7-5 season at Baylor would be an acceptable result. Not a great one, but certainly not a fireable one. But because of Dave's past, I think we all agree that 7-5 this season shouldn't be enough to save his job. Whether it will or not is up for debate, but I think most of us are on the same page about whether it should be.

So what are we really doing here? Beyond lessening a contract buyout, is this not all kind of a waste of time? I actually like this year's roster and coaching staff and think this team can be pretty good in the Big 12. But I still think the most likely outcome is a 6-6 or 7-5 record. Which brings me back to the impossible situation Dave has created for himself.

We could show a lot of improvement, be a pretty good 7-5 team and actually strengthen our foundation going forward for a future with Dave Aranda at the helm. But it's a future almost no one wants at this point. So anything less than 10 wins -- a virtually impossible standard at this point in time -- is going to be met by most with disappointment.

And because we lost the Auburn game, we have no margin for error going forward, so every single game in Big 12 play is the Battle of Helm's Deep just to set up another existential battle the following week. And any single loss between now and our final three-game stretch against BYU, Tech and Houston will feel like the fall of Rohan.

I want to be able to enjoy this season, so I'm trying to set a reasonable standard of success with a firm threshold at 8-4. But that's lower than what many here hold due to the circumstances detailed above. I think we can afford one more loss between now and the BYU game to reach the standard I've set, but that's a tall order for any team in the Big 12 and it still wouldn't be enough for many to feel good about bringing Dave back for 2027.

This is why it's typically a bad idea to bring back a coach that most fans have already lost confidence in. Once you let things get bad enough, even reasonable success is viewed as failure, which isn't fair to the people around the head coach who don't carry the same baggage into the conversation.

I'm still hoping we shock the football world and have a great season. And if that saves Dave's job, so be it. But I, like most here, feel that Dave Aranda is more of an obstacle than an asset to our program's long-term success, which makes for a weird rooting experience.

Thus, the Dave Aranda problem.

First, I love your posts. They're so naively hysterical.

There have been 10,000 Aranda threads. But in my opinion, simply put the foundational problems with Aranda are twofold:

1. He does not ever seem to have a plan: every year there are massive changes outside of him, which indicates he really has no idea what he is doing and just rearranges the deck chairs enough to save his job

2. He's so boring that it is hard to get excited about the Bears - even during the Steele - Morris years, they would get you excited about Baylor football. Dave is just an odd bird, and I think he just does not have the personality to be a leader

I do not think anyone wants Dave to fail; but most are tired of this. Being 5-5 is in some ways the worst place to be: if a team is good, everyone is happy; if bad, easy to make a change ... we've been doing mediocrity for five seasons.

Being Hired December 8th of 2025, Doug was in a near impossible position to fire Aranda when he arrived. He had to get educated on Aranda's contract, put together a short list/wish list of replacements and line up BMDs willing to dish out the money on both Aranda's buyout and the replacements buyout. BU doesn't have enough BMDs to afford a snap judgment hire.

All those things Doug walked into should have already been handled by Mack but he was preoccupied with a side chick.

I really like Jeremiah Dickey and I know he a Doug are very familiar with one another but, I hope Doug steals his football coach from him.

Whether he got brought back because we're an institution of learning not a football school, or he caught a lucky break and his boss got fired and it saved him, or if we're saving buyout dollars is a matter of great debate around here. 9-3, 8-4 buy him another year. I'm not sure they should, but they will. 7-5 or 6-6 probably buy him another year as well. Neither of them should (definitely not 6-6l, but now we're back in that circle that is Baylor football. That said, I remember saying regularly in the late 90s early 00s that I would be more than happy with a coach who always went 7-5 and occasionally 9-3. Seems we're back in that boat.

Anything 5-7 or worse should have him out. I'm in the camp that would be more than willing to fire him Saturday if Colorado beats us, but mid year firings often don't produce immediately positive results because the roster is pretty much set in stone, and our roster has issues), so I would be okay with an end of year firing.

The lame duck year seems to be a replay of prior years so far. I'm having trouble finding a sixth win, but I will take the next six games one at a time and hope we survive 4-2 or better. It's the last three I see as automatic Ls.

3. His in game coaching and decisioning is atrocious. Coaching to win and coaching to not lose are two different things...unfortunately CDA has displayed the latter moreso.

Pretty spot on by the OP. This was my frustration. This season by all accounts is a wash. The issue is if Dave wins 6 Baylor will bring him back. And that would be the final nail in the programs coffin. By bringing Dave back for a lame duck you've essentially wasted 2 seasons. The next HC is going to need a a year to set his foundation. So realistically Baylor is wasting 2 seasons. I'll never root for Baylor to lose. But Dave messing around and winning 6 plus further complicates things imo.

I agree with Doug's take on this generally, but it's only because I think the players and coaches around Dave Aranda deserve to have their work judged on its merit.

They shouldn't have their efforts discredited by association.

I think they deserve a wait-and-see approach even if Dave doesn't.

There is a lot of parity in the B12. So many teams are on equal footing now... even TT has come back into the fold a bit it looks like. HC can be the deciding factor week to week.

Coaching becomes a real X-factor. I don't think we have the right guy to motivate and make the right decisions to put us into the top third of this conference unfortunately.

No. That is a justification used by the admin to keep avoid responsibility for Dave. We have had a revolving door of coordinators, they don't get any more time for hitching their wagons to the titanic.

I agree with everyone's thoughts on Dave as a strategist, in-game decision maker, program leader (big swinging changes every year that cover up on issue but reveal three more). But where I would disagree with some is that Dave's personality is ineffective to be a head coach. We have seen other head coach's win with a reserved personality like that - Bill Snyder, Tom Osborne, Chris Petersen.

To be fair, even Art Briles, while certainly could get guys fired up in the locker room, was not overly gregarious on the sideline.

Now clearly, Dave is unable to motivate his teams consistently. But I don't think it's because people with a personality like his or that aren't fiery can't be head football coaches. The problem is just him, individually.

The current season, which has yet to be played.

I'm not saying anything is going to change, but he's not getting fired before November, if at all. See what it looks like after TCU, at least. By then the decision could become far easier to make, or harder.

The AD, if he's decent at all, or has any idea what his job actually entails, has already been compiling a list of potential replacement candidates, and looking for more, possibly including even current members of the staff. He's also making his own judgments as to whether Aranda has progressed at all in his leadership of the team, or if a corner is turned in the right direction. And there's also the contract situation, and what you do, if anything.

I think it is best to be in observation mode. Nobody's getting fired very soon, and really shouldn't be.

There is a lot of football to be played. I don't think you can make a lot out of these first three games, some improvement, and a couple of essentially scrimmages. Try to enjoy some Baylor wins.

Although, I'm looking hard at the TCU game for a major litmus test.

There have been 10,000 Dave Aranda Job Security threads, but unfortunately 9,990 of them have been posted by the same handful of posters. And they tend to skew dog-whistle-ey with vague allusions to DEI or some other stupid bull***** So, while there has been a lot of digital ink wasted on the subject, very little of it has actually been of substance. I think this is a worthy discussion topic.

I will add, while we absolutely have a problem with our head coach, we also have a problem with our fanbase. This other is certainly not unique to Baylor, or to this website (visit TexAgs this morning if you want a hearty laugh), but the problem is that the dumbest voices are usually the loudest voices. Screeching about us needing to fire the HC every day doesn't make it more likely to happen. It doesn't make the person doing it appear brave. It really doesn't do anything, other than let the staffer in the athletic department who monitors the message boards know that the general sentiment hasn't changed. I guess there might be some value in that?

Our fanbase is only because it is smaller and that means the louder voices take up more space. For the last decade, the admin at Baylor has done everything it can to operate in a bubble and ignore the problems and needs of the base and football program. If they had timely corrected obvious errors, and didn't spend that energy gaslighting the base into thinking Aranda is secretly good or the program is heading in the right direction with NIL or we are keeping pace with our peers at TCU, SMU, and Houston, then we wouldn't need to be driven to desperate measure like foregoing attendance at games to get the point across.

I don't want Baylor to lose, but they will not succeed at the level they should under Dave. This has been obvious for years. The admin doesn't care until we close our wallets, and then it becomes this big production of entitlement and fan blaming as the reason for why Baylor football is the way it is. We are too small a base to be divided over these things, in the land of compromise and joining hands at the table that means they have to listen to the loudmouths and sunshine pumpers (even our resident fools). The admin has truly lost the pulse of the fanbase and that was something it did on purpose.

As an aside, I would move away from these aggressive long-term extensions. No need to give a coach a ridiculous extension after one year of success. At the end of the day, provide a great environment and resources and good coaches will stay. If another, bigger program wants our coach, a $100M buyout likely would be stop the poaching.

Without wins, there's no reason to be enthusiastic about the future. It's all about wins and losses at this point. We're so far past the vibes check, it's silly.

To have any hope of keeping his job, Dave needs to stop stealing defeat from the jaws of victory and turn close games into wins. The record is all that matters this year IMO. And we're already 0-1 in winnable games against comparably talented teams.

Idk about 9, but I am afraid he gets to 8 and we are in 2024 all over again. The problem is that in our league, you can win 8 games (particularly with 2 non-P4 games) and still not be a good team. I think if he gets to 8 wins, there will be a somewhat large contingent (mostly from the premium board and 365 sunshine pumper staff) who will vocalize a desire to keep him. But the problem is that all of those 8 wins could be over bad teams. You can win 8 or 9 games as a member of the Big 12 and still be a directionless program.

I think anything outside of making the Big 12 championship game, we should cut bait. But I'm afraid the conundrum you have presented is one that could likely happen.

When you're short on cash, you often have to make sub optimal decisions.

This is not going to be an easy year for Doug or Linda. Dave is likely to perform around (or slightly above) historic Baylor levels, but much of the fanbase is already over it. Not an easy situation for the decisionmakers.

I think Aranda is an atrocious game day tactician. I think he's boring, and I think he lacks the vision/energy of a real head coach. He's wired like a coordinator or a position coach. That said, if he wins 7 or 8 and goes to a bowl game, I think we keep him. And maybe should.

Hopefully he wins 4 or 10 so there's not much debate, but neither of those are likely IMO.

I'm in the minority camp I suppose in that I think this is primarily a money issue and not an issue of how many games he wins or does not win in 2026.

Baylor University President Dr. Linda A. Livingstone published a Message on Football Leadership on November 21, 2025, announcing that the university will retain head football coach Dave Aranda for the upcoming season. The letter includes this paragraph.

Quote:

Financial stewardship: In an era of extreme volatility in college athletics with NIL, the transfer portal, revenue-sharing, and much more, this approach allows us to invest wisely in the program's future rather than incur significant buyout costs during an unprecedented turnover of coaches across the country.

Last year the decision was made "invest wisely" which translated into hiring a new DC and buying players rather than paying CDA's buyout. I expect a similar decision in 2026 regardless of wins and losses. I'd like to be wrong about this, but I just don't think there are enough stacks of cash to go around.

Yup there will be no buy out unless there is some stellar coach that comes available with guarantee from a BMD. Otherwise he will finish out his contract here and unfortunately move up the rankings in terms of winningest coach regardless of loss record. He will get a statue and a big care bear hug from Livingstone as we continue the downward spiral of what we consider to be mediocrity. I hope I am wrong. To have him in the top 4 winningest actually makes me sick.
