It's obvious that Morris was moving up the depth chart. He could be. I've not seen signs that Knighten is.

I guess they must be as they outran D1 players.

Pre-season, I thought one of the weaknesses of this team was going to be not having a " home run hitter" type RB - but based on the ASU game, Morris just might be that back. He looked really fast on the long run in the first quarter. If so, that alone changes the dynamic for this team. Knighten's run in the second half was amazing too, but to me that looked a lot more like the ASU defense being out of position and taking bad angles on tackles.

Spav is finally learning his RB's. Dawson, who I really like, should never start. He's a better short yardage back. The others have quicker feet and are more explosive.
However, Zona St forced Baylor into 15 3rd and longs of which 9 were converted , granted, but better Defenses will surely test Spav's Offense's ability to continue drives.

Knighten ran a 10.52 100 in High School and Morris ran a 10.58

I really believe the eye test and results justify benching Dawson as the starter.

Even if that happens, I would still use Dawson for more than just 3rd & 4th down short yardage situations, including late fourth quarter situations when we have the lead and need to run clock by pounding it up the gut against what is hopefully a worn down defense at that point.

Can Dawson run 75 yards for a TD?

That's uncommon. What is more likely is going from 1st and 10 to 2nd and 6. Dawson can do that. From my seat, Knighten has more often than not gotten us to 2nd and 9.

Morris looks like the fastest. Knighten showed a good burst on his big score but Turner has shown a much better job getting north or trying to at least. We have 4 playable backs. None are helped by an OL that has struggled all year getting a good push up front but I don't think NFL scouts are showing up to watch our running backs. Not a knock just the reality of needing more consistent production from the run game if we want to win the next 3-4 in a row.

You seriously saw Knighten do what Dawson is incapable of and you stand by your statement? Ok, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

What impressed me about Knighten wasn't just his speed. It was his great and well-timed cutback toward the middle of the field that earned him the last 15-20 yards.

Yes. I've seen Knighten for two years. I've not seen enough get to the edge for 9. I've not seen enough cutback into the hole for 7. I've not seen enough get through the hole for 20.

75 is nice. It's uncommon. The cutback lanes are not. In some ways it's my issue with Pendergrass, too. He makes yards. Getting into the hole (it's more a sense things not a talent thing) has been missing. I hope Morris solves that.

I think mixing and matching is a great way to do it. Morris can really provide a great change of pace, but you can't run that guy up the middle and not expect him to get hurt. He's a little bigger than Sqwirl, but not much. Ya a 180-pound blazer is always awesome until they get hurt.

I would probably

(1) start Morris but only run him outside or in pass game to keep him healthy. Having the home-run threat on film does open up the pass-game and allow DJ to get in a rythm. We are always likely to be a pass to open up the run team.
(2) rotate in the others (Turner and Knighten) based on situation and game flow.
(3) make Dawson the short yardage and 4th quarter closer. There are still plenty of carries there for him and that's his highest and best use for most games.

If we can keep all four of these guys healthy and fresh it will be a very serviceable group.

Yeah, but when Dawson ran that 12, he had 3 guys on him trying to tackle him.

All it takes is good blocking and Dawson doing the rest! What's so hard to understand?

It's ok if all backs are not the same. After watching Spav's failed run game in '25 and the first 4 games of '26, with Dawson being the featured back more or less, and then seeing the difference Saturday night with others being featured equally who are quicker and more explosive, it's my opinion that Saturday night's run game plan will be more successful going forward.
