Yep

Also the best player in one era likely would not be the best in a different one. Smaller faster OL of a veer offense are vastly different that the super sized and very strong Brile's style. Large LBs that could stuff the run of old are not the best to coverage

Let's just say defensive players from Teaff era and offensive players from Briles era. Everybody happy?
It was before my time, but there were some pretty salty players on the Sugar Bowl team and from Sauer's teams too. The Sugar Bowl team was vicious too. Had an older business associate that was a Vanderbilt graduate and had attended the BU vs UT Sugar Bowl. He said he had never seen a team with a nastier, stomp on your head when you were down attitude and playing style than that year's Bears. Said they violated the Vols all day long. He loved it.

From the game recap on the Sugar Bowl web site:

Quote:

Tennessee guard Bruce Burnham and Baylor guard Charley Horton got into a scuffle on the ground. Burnham got in a couple of punches. Seeing that, Hickman rushed in and kicked Burnham in the face.

The defenseless Vol lay sprawled on the field quivering, ribbons of blood covering his features. "I thought the boy would be gone before we got him off the field," commented a physician on the scene. "There's no way anyone could excuse what I did," Hickman reflected decades later. "I think I was so keyed upIn my mind I saw him doing something he shouldn't, and I guess I just flashed temper."

Not entirely. Bridger's offenses were the most innovative in the nation. Stanley Williams and Del Shofner were All-America's in their time. Briles did not invent offense at Baylor though he did do a hell of a job with it.

Benson was pretty dang good. I would pick some others ahead of him - Santana Dotson and Ervin Randle come to mind, but there are some others too.

Van McElroy probably broke as many helmets or more than Singletary. If you remember the "hit" on a pass that was thrown to the TE at Arkansas in the 80's. The ball was thrown to the Arkansas TE, McElroy nailed him and it intercepted by Vic Vines and the TE was seen picking his 4 front teeth off that hard artificial turf at the old Baylor Stadium. He hit him so had it knocked out the TE's front teeth. Preachers kid, tough as nails. All state QB and safety and won the state in 5he 300 meter hurdles, and could dunk a basket ball like no other.

That was an awesome hit and as hard as any I have ever seen. But is was in Fayetteville, not Waco.

That hit would not be legal these days. McElroy was a great defensive back. He had a great knack for coming up with interceptions and knocking the he'll out of receivers.

Speaking of hard hits by DBs, I will never forget the hit Ron Burns put on Marty Akins during the 2nd half of the '74 "Miracle on the Brazos" UT game that resulted in a key fumble. I was amazed that Akins was able to get up and still know what planet he was on. My understanding is Akins had to be practically carried to the locker room at the end of that game.

I didn't say it was In Waco. You must've been on the former BOR.

You said picking four teeth off the turf of Old Baylor Stadium but where isn't that important.

If the list isn't primarily comprised of players from 2013 and 2014, it ain't legit. Sorry, but Baylor pretty much has limited to zero national impact beyond those two teams. Maybe you could select one or two from the era when helmets or facemasks weren't worn, but the only national relevance in modern day came from the 2013 and 2014 teams.

Child please. One or two. That's a joke
Besides maybe Oakman there's not a player from 13-14 that could have started on Defense for the 85-86 team
Those squads were ranked top 10 in defense nationally
Maybe you've never heard of the first ever Jim Thorpe award winner Thomas Everett
Go and do your research on how many guys we put in the league
And Oakman only exhibited 1985/1986 defense on 1 or 2 plays a series.

To many on here Baylor Football only started in 2011 and to some it only counted starting 2013.

Yeah, I don't get that. There is a strong element from Baylorfans to 365 that like to talk about football and basketball success in the 2010s as making Baylor relevant. Like it made the place as a school or the fan relevant. Kudos to the Bears that had success on the field and on the court in all decades. Be proud as an alum but do something in your life from your own talents to make yourself feel relevant.
