Don't go to New Orleans and miss the great opportunity to see an important piece of our nation's history.

https://www.nationalww2museum.org

The museum is located on Magazine Street, it's close to the Sugar Bowl, Bourbon Street and the major hotels, so it's a decent walk or short cab ride at worst. I like to stay in the Hilton Riverside because it's close to the museum. Some back story here, of course.

The Museum is located in New Orleans primarily for two reasons.

Reason #1: Author Stephen Ambrose spent a lot of time in New Orleans and wrote many of his books from New Orleans after holding teaching positions in places like..Kansas. It was Ambrose' efforts to get recognition for WW2 Vets that helped found the museum

Reason #2: The Higgins Boats used to spearhead amphibious assaults were built in New Orleans, naturally. The US struggled with methods to advance men and material from ocean going ships to beaches and islands and the New Orleans shipbuilding company owned by Higgins was the perfect fit.

My recommendation is to get there early and schedule a visit. The museum is staffed by a veterans organization and is very well run. If you have a veteran family member and would like to honor their participation in WW2, you can buy a commemorative brick in the museum facility and it makes for a nice donation.

I've been a visiting for over 20 years and the museum has continued to evolve with the participation of Hollywood luminaries like Tom Hanks/Stephen Spielberg.

I go regularly. They have added so much to it you can't see it all in a day. You can also ride a rebuilt PT boat in Lake Ponchartrain that the museum has

Yeah, explain to people how they can sort of either see the fllm side or the museum side. The special movie is very entertaining and terrifyingly realistic, but it takes time.

I like to roam and see the artifacts.

FYI, Ambrose wrote Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan based largely on the first person narratives that are viewable at the museum. Those are amazing to see first hand.

The Beyond All Boundaries show is great. Saw it one year the day after the Ohio St-Bama playoff game, packed museum with OSU fans. Took my daughter's then boyfriend from San Antonio that day, he was amazed at the displays.

Just venturing here, but if someone wanted to get a big tour group it might mean discount and easier scheduling.

FYI, that's sort of a 'special' event in a custom theater that brings in smoke, rising towers and shaking chairs. Not for the PTSD sufferers, just fyi, but it give you a hint at the intensity.

And yes, it's on the spot realistic. I think it's ALL must see. The experience teaches history quite well.

This museum has been on my bucket list for years. I'm as pumped about seeing this as I am the game!

Not gonna lie. It's well worth it. I'm a huge fan, have donated and help them find weapons for their collection.

If you have a preference trip reading list and want suggestions, let me know.

Their museum shop is good and they have great book signings, too

The French Quarter is really nice when it's need filled with drunkards. The Cafe du Mond has great coffee & beignets (spelling?). There are so many other things to see & do and so much history in the city. I only wish I could go. Oh well, I did make it to the 10 games the team played in Texas. That's something!

Isn't there a boat tour where they hang meat out for alligators to jump out of the water?

There are several. The airboat tours are fun but being late December the gators will be hunkered down. Check out the photos on this guides page.
