Don't Hold Your Breath for CFP Expansion

You can thank Texas, OU, and the SEC for the reason the CFP likely won't expand anytime soon.

With the SEC trying to "corner the market" by adding OU and UT, the other 3 P5's decided to hold off on expansion because they realize the SEC is trying to game the system and justify getting a majority of the slots in an expanded playoff.

However, with the other conferences against it for now, this limits the number of teams the SEC could potentially sneak in each season (2017 was the only year the SEC had multiple teams in the CFP).

Had UT and OU stayed, the expansion was likely a done deal, as the P5's would still remain fairly balanced.

Ironically, that would have benefitted OU and UT more, as a good season for either would be enough to get them a place in the expanded CFP due to their blueblood status. But if they move and the CFP stays at 4 teams, then it will be harder for either team to beat out their new SEC mates for one of the 4 coveted slots.

I imagine the CFP would expand if OU and UT stayed put, thus not significantly impacting the balance of power.

And ultimately, that would benefit the conference as a whole and give all members of the Big XII a legit pathway to a playoff system.

But now there is no telling when an expansion will happen.

The actual reason the other P5 conferences don't want to expand is because of ESPN. Right now, ESPN has exclusive rights to the playoff. They don't want one network having all of the games. They'd prefer a model like the NFL where it rotates around the the highest bidder for each level. For example ESPN may pay for the championship game, but the finals and semi finals may go to Fox and CBS. Sell the packages separately to make kore money.

Probably a little bit of both.

What is, is.
What was, will be.
What will be WAAAAS, but will be again.
