And there you have your reason:

LUBBOCK, Texas Joey McGuire signed a six-year, $20.2 million deal to be Texas Tech's head football coach, a Texas Tech official confirmed Tuesday. The contract averages out to a $3.37 million annual salary. In year one of his deal, McGuire will get $3 million, per Texas Tech.

Unbelievable......but good for him. His retirement gig.................

Football schools are insane. Throwing money everywhere. I'd want the guy to prove something first but hey why not just hand him 20 million and then see what he can do.

You work hard, treat people right, get really good at what you do, and good things can happen. I'm for Joey every Saturday but one.

That's actually a real cheap contract.

I'm really happy for him. I hate that he is at a rival especially in the big 12 but he is a class act.
He applied and was interviewed before we gave the job to Rhule and Rhule convinced him to stay. That had to be a hard pill to swallow. He was a hot commodity and probably could have went to other places during that time. He stayed with us and I think Tech made a great hire.

Turning down Southern Miss a year ago was a great move for him.

It was 2 years ago. He might possibly have been a hot name among other coaches as an assistant if that is what you mean. In 02 Briles sought out Teaff's career advice reportedly. I actually believe the advice Teaff gave Briles at this same stage of his career was good. If you want to be a successful P5 HC take a G5 HC job first spend some time doing that Teaff reportedly advised. Briles upon the advice sought the UH job instead of the Baylor job in 2002 when both jobs were open.

Good for Joey. He seems to be an all around great guy and nobody seems to have anything bad to say about him. He worked his career coaching high school for little money most of those years. Now he's setting himself and his family up for life. Couldn't be happier for him.

+1 for the good guys
