That was the Continental Cowboy before Oakleys. There was also a country music club that was next to Taco Torch and sat back from Valley Mills. It later became Savvys for a short period of time. Owned by the Dallas based rock band of the same name. I saw Too Smooth there.

Sounds like there were a whole lot more options for students back in the day
There were a few more dance hall type places but there are more bars now with a few that have dance floors like Melody Ranch and oakley's.

But for bars/ bar and grills there are:
Trojan
Cricket's
Twisted Sisters
scruffy's
Dichotomy
Whatever 5th street ice house is called now- I think it is 5 nite club or something like that
halftime
Austin's
The warehouse
The backyard
Dancing Bear
Freight Icehouse
Shorty's (it used to basically be a bar after a certain time to students not sure if that is how it still is)
Salty Dog
The Grape
Blue dog wine
George's
Barnett's
Crying Shame
Lounge 93
Dodge City Saloon (used to be something else but I can't remember the name on Wooded Acres)
lakeside
Segovia
True Love
Clicks (pool hall)
The Buckle (fairly new right on Bagby and 5th)
Hemingways
Route 77 Food park/Bar

Basically any restaurant with a bar area
Several of the newer hotels that have bars often have special nights I have known some students to go and take advantage of

And several others that are more of a local seen then college students like a papa joes in Lorena or several in Lacy Lakeview/Bellmead

Left off Rocky Racoon's

I don't know that one. Where is it? Is it one of the more local bars?
in the building behind Burger King that currently houses Unique Guns

Isn't that where Dodge City is located?

Or did it change it's name?

I don't remember that one. I can't even think of where Taco Torch was right now. Wasn't it at like Valley mills and Bagby right across from the Jack in the box?

nope. Where Valles is now. Was Saxon Sandwich Shop when originally built in the late 60s, then Taco Torch for 20+ years, then Kenny Rogers Chicken, then Schlotzsky's, then Stranger's burger joint, now Valles. Next to Baris (which was originally Pizza Inn).

The original Taco Torch was in the building next door to Baris. They closed it and opened another one next door to Long John Silver's.

That's right.

I don't remember a country club there, just Oakely's/ Continental Cowboy that is just a few doors down the street.

Looking at the map there isn't even a building behind that location until you get to self storage places that are either more behind Genies Car wash or a different road so not sure what it was.

It was in a building that sat back from the road. The building is gone and might have been where NTB or the Mexican grocery (Mercado something) is now.

B.P. was a great little club. For years, that space was the Ace O' Clubs...Lotta beer went down there, and good pool table..Booter did a great business when she opened Broken Promise...Across Valley Mills saw some activity too..Building where Genco CU now sits opened as The Elite Steak House..Colias Bros did a good job there for years..It later closed, and Jeanie Bradshaw remodeled and opened The PeachTree...Really nice club and did a good business too..One of Waco's best night spots..

Wasnt Kelly's the place in the strip center across from Triangle Tower on New Road in the mid 90s?
Exactly. It was in a strip center on New Road.

Of course looks like it now is a Mexican taco place: https://www.google.com/maps/@31.5279337,-97.1733661,3a,75y,235.97h,101.12t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQLFIoOOSZ1sCTDQ-YEYAsA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu
Did this place used to have a red door? There was a place I think that way we used to go to, but we just called it Red Door. If I ever knew its name I forgot long ago. That linked picture sure looks like the place (sans red doors) and it was in the middle of a mostly unoccupied (at that time) strip center.

There was a dance place called the Paladium downtown. Not the current fancy one. Not my favorite, but girls liked it

Two Minis ; - )

Can't mention LaSalle and rough without the Showtime.

I was at BU late 80/early 90s if that's not obvious.

I don't think so ... feels like it was green.

I had a few good nights both at Booters and Broken Promise. Can you remind me where it was? Getting old and can't remember exactly where it was with all the new stuff .. just north of New Road, right?

Across street from Genco CU..Arby's..Very little parking in front..only couple of spaces..you had to park in back..try and miss telephone pole..and come in back door..Edit: Bob Ryan's "Depot" on 26th and Waco Dr. ( across 26th from Kims) was my favorite old gin mill..(now Dog House) Lots of Downtown professionals would visit for Happy Hour after work and tell stories of the day..Very eclectic clientele..Might find anybody and everybody in there having a "mood changer" or two after a long day..Even had a shuffleboard where you had to play some of Waco's bankers and attorneys that had a knack for slidin' down a "hanger."

Yep..sure was...in between stints of Ace and B.P. Edit: Buck Massey and crew came up with those crafty names...Changed Manhattan to Chapter 11....Ace to Branch Office...Crying Shame ( can't recall prior name) ...Depot to Toastie's...Buck liked smaller bars that were easier to run..He ,Booter, and Danny were business partners for many years.. ..Thinking back ( hard to do sometimes!) Branch Office might have had an owner before Buck and crew, although that sounds like his "handywork" on names..

Crying Shame was The Pub previous to Buck buying it. And a c-store whose name escapes me on on end and Bozarth's Liquor on the other before that.

Thanks! Before Buck bought it, it wasn't one of my stops..I do remember now the store next to it..Buck took in that space as the business grew..Also made a few stops just behind there on Sanger at Bill Snyder's "J.D. Daniels" Nice little bar area...Had more than a few there..

Another lesser know lounge that we frequented in the early 80's was Charlies. It was a small bar in the rear of a building that housed a convenience store (Circle K, I think) that faced Lake Air Dr. Charlie's faced Hawthorne Dr. It backed up to the cluster of apartments between Lake Air Dr and Sanger Ave. It was one of the bars that opened early on mornings to serve the graveyard shift workers from Imperial Dr.

That space was the original Mother Red's location..Barbara and Fred moved the club to larger digs in the old Caravan West space facing Sanger..( shared building with Dicortes)

What was the place behind the crying shame? I went once to karaoke there. I think it was called PJ's or something.

I only remember they stopped a girl singing because she cussed in the song and they were like "we don't do that here."

Then they overcharged me and weren't going to refund my money when I went back a few days later with receipts showing my bill was X and they entered Y. After arguing and haggling and basically having to threaten to sue they finally gave my money back. I remember it was something like the charge was supposed to be like $22.50 but they put in 222.50 so it was a big deal and that is why I argued.

At one point it was Pj"s. It opened as the Outpost, we'd play racquetball at Spenco and then go across the street and drink the rest of the night away.

At some point after the Outpost, it became the Iron Skillet..mainly food, but they kept the side bar space..then J.D. Daniels Steakhouse..Good food and fun bar...I quit the "sauce" while it was still J.D.s..Many moons ago!

The old P&L Casino was out FM 933 (Gholson Hwy) ..It sat on the county line between McLennan and Hill County..I think Hill County was completely "dry" at the time, hence the location. I saw Tony Douglas and the Shrimpers , a very good country band play there..Had to be in early 70's..Haven't been up that way in many moons...I'm sure it's been gone for decades..

We likely know the same people. I was part of the crew that turned it from a Kappa Sig hangout to the 92-93 sensation. Hopefully gave Hattie a better retirement.
