When the building was first built in the late '60s, it was Jefferson-Moore HS. In 1986 it became the WHS 9th grade center, then converted into a stand alone A.J. Moore Academy. It then became Indian Springs Middle School about 10 years ago and in the last year or two has housed Kendrick Elementary while it was being rebuilt. Very valuable real estate that should never have been used for a school.

wonder how many taxpayer dollars will be wasted at that facility?

All the money WISD gains (estimated both properties bring in a combined $35 million) would pay for the WISD portion of the building. Both entities really need new building due to aging facilities and growth.

Aging facilities is real but isn't WISD growth down not up?

My concern is that they are going to "share" this facility, but then a few years down the road they are going to say they outgrew the space and need their own facilities. I do not understand why they just do not build separate buildings next to each other.

I'm well aware. I was the first 9th Grade Center class in 1986 to go there. Still had the Purple and Yellow "J-Mo-Hi" paint on the walls.

Still need a new admin building. The tower is older than it looks due to a facade put on in the 1960s. The cost ot maintain is increasing and it is very structurally inefficient. A new building will actually save money regarding operational costs. There is also a lot of wasted space since the building is not based on modern standards. A new smaller building and shared space with the city will lower costs and the real estate value will pay for it without a bond issue. Win/win.

Sharing common space saves money for both entities and opens up valuable real estate for development and tax dollars. Think of how much value is now on the tax rolls after WISD sold both University High and Middle School sites on the Interstate.

I am totally fine with sharing spaces, but my concern is that in 5 years from now, they will say they have outgrown the space and need a new space separate from each other and will want to spend the money on additional space. It is the way the government spending works.

New city hall and new city admin offices slated in the "near" future. This may be a stop gap to share until city of Waco moves to their new digs. Right now admin offices are scattered among various downtown buildings.

I'm pretty sure this includes most city offices. They have been wanting to consolidate into one facility since Kathy Rice was the city manager several years ago. As a Previous poster said, when the city of Waco builds, it builds for the long-term.

I was thinking shared space until the new digs are built. Then maybe WISD would take over the current ones and city moved out.

Well...With the current world situation, the old basement where Kendrick stored tires might be converted into a jim dandy shelter from a nuclear attack! ..that's a pleasant thought, ain't it?
