It is very active and hosts frequent history tours and ghost tours.

It is likely one of the most famous in Texas and not going anywhere.

Evidently, I wasn't a geography major. In my head, I thought that was Oakwood.

That is actually First Street Cemetery and is a State Antiquities Landmark.

I get that times were different back then, but I do find it perplexing that they dumped so much trash and put cemeteries next to their greatest resource of the time which is the river. Pretty mind blowing.

A big chunk of that property is cemetery. The last time they expanded the Ranger museum they uncovered some unmarked graves.

Then again, there's big cemetery directly across the street from Rice-Eccles Stadium at Utah, and one just a few feet behind the stands at Death Valley at Clemson.

I know I'm in the minority on this view but I don't care for not developing land because it was a cemetery. Especially if it has not been used for new burials in decades. Move the bodies somewhere else. "Historical" cemeteries don't make sense to me.

People have built over cemeteries for centuries in other parts of the world, which is why they often find bodies when doing construction.

But I am not on the side of protecting an old cemetery just because.

None of those guys are buried there.

And even then it still is a waste imo. Move the bodies that are there and use the land in a better way.

I'm a history guy but the burial site of ______ famous person doesn't interest me. Military cemeteries like Arlington, Normandy, Gettysburg are different and do.


But a random old cemetery (like the one in Waco) that doesn't have any truly famous people, is not on the site of an old battleground, is not active, and otherwise is just a waste of space can be moved and should be.

Still wish they had built the Mayborn downtown instead of in the middle of our athletic facilities. A museum district near Magnolia would have been a nice tourism draw, but that is all in hindsight now.

Also wish they would build an aquarium or something of sorts near downtown. I always thought an aquarium like the one in Chattanooga, TN would complement Waco well.
