Climatologists have studied for years why the wind blows so hard from west to east across the west Texas plains. Nobody really knows for sure. The only explanation the can come up with is that

I graduated high school about 30 miles down river from El Paso. The blowing sand would get so bad you couldn't drive. You could see well enough to drive, but your car would end up sand-blasted. The automobile paint companies loved it.
