WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A new baseball and softball complex is coming to Waco, which right now is just 50 acres of woods right off of Gholson Road, just south of Chalk Bluff.
But local businessman Stuart Parsons says within the next year he will turn it into a luxury sports ranch that the whole community can enjoy for generations to come.
"I want it to be where the fields are used every single day… to make an impact," Parsons shared.
He says he's always loved how sports bring people together, having always been involved in the baseball and softball world, but especially now with both his kids playing.

"I guess where it started we donated the China Spring turf fields and named them after my mom, that inspired me to build a turf field at our ranch for the kids," Parsons explained.
Which then gave him the idea to build an entire complex right in the Heart of Texas. From there he says it only took a couple months to get things moving.
"Made a deal on the property this week, we're starting to clear out today, and before you know it we'll have fields," he shared.
The hope is to be having tournaments there this time next year. His plan is to build a total of six turf fields, three for baseball and three for softball.

"With that, I think that you know the experience of having a place where people can eat, congregate," Parsons said, "we want to make it where the whole family has something to do."
While they're still working out the details, Parsons says he wants to also build cabins for traveling teams, a splash pad, and even pickleball courts.
"We're going to a tournament this weekend at Rocker B up in Graford, and I plan on getting some more ideas," he explained.
But so far he says the response from the community has been amazing, with people already reaching out about wanting to be a part of this.

"It's overwhelming, I mean it really is," Parsons expressed, "I feel like you know I've been blessed to be able to do something like this."
But even once the Parsons Sports Ranch is open, Parsons says he hopes to continue to add to it, sharing that the sky is the limit.

Given Waco's location, he should be able to capitalize on the travel ball economy. People get tired of going to Franklin, TX, or Graford every weekend.

Sounds like he's trying to replicate Rocker B. Hope he does it right.

Why Midway LL hasn't let Granger be used tournaments is beyond me.

Why would they?

Because they could rake in money through gate fees and tournament entries. They've had multiple fundraisers trying to raise $600k for new lights this past year, had major initiatives to raise funds to add shading to Broughton, and are looking at turifng more fields which is the most expensive project of all.

Midway LL is one of the few little leagues that doesn't get city funding, so, hosting tournaments at Granger would bring in a solid source of additional revenue to cover the aforementioned capital projects they've struggled to cover. They currently rely entirely on donations and the exceptionally meager per player enrollment costs (which includes jerseys, no less).

It's where all of the Midway Little League baseball games are played...

Thank you for the map. Thats Hewitt to me. No clue what Granger is.

Perhaps the bylaws prevent field rentals? I heard back in the day when Broughton gave the land for the fields, the stipulation was it was to only be used for little league.

So these would be new fields not far away from the other little league fields off of Lake shore? And those really are not that old and are in good condition. The softball fields off of University are in good condition also.

I don't see the benefit of this other than both types of fields are in one location. This one seems even further away from hotels and things for teams that stay in hotels. Yes I know he envisioned cabins on site for teams to stay in but if it is a large tournament most people will still be in hotels.

Seems like a weird thing to push when there are good fields here already.

The fields in lake shore are city owned… if parsons and the city can work together, larger tournaments can come to Waco.

Select baseball and softball are money makers and there aren't enough locations in Waco to host, parsons looking to cash in.

Partnering with the city to bring in larger tournaments would be a win for both Parsons and the city. Parsons would make money from the use of his facilities while the city would collect revenue from hotels/Fimfo and restaurants.

I've been out of the travel baseball game for a few years, but Riverbend was always a nightmare to use. The city would shut you down if it looked like it was going to rain. If someone puts in a privately owned all turf complex they will print money with it.

Axtell has a turf-only complex and they very, very heavily market the fact it takes nothing short of an active hurricane to cancel a tourney there. Riverbend is a nightmare, agreed. We've had several tournaments in Gatesville, and while not turf, that is my fav. complex by a country mile. It has shade!

I am a longtime softball ump. Axtell does a great job with their tourney's. I have umped there for several years and know most of the board. I love the turf. They have the ability to use their HS field, if they need to for tournaments.

Lorena, while they don't have turf, they have done an amazing job trying to attract tournaments. They have completely rebuilt their complex into a very nice facility. The only problem is (besides that it's not turf) that it is not convenient to get to.

Riverbend used to be poppin'. Every weekend the place filled. Softball one weekend and baseball the next. I can't speak to baseball, but I umped everything there from Coach-Pitch to 18U. We had some really good teams from both the Metroplex and the Austin area make the drive.

About 7-8+ years ago, Riverbend (seemed to) quit marketing their complex. At that time, I noticed that sites, like Temple, Round Rock, etc. all had their tourney's listed on a softball website. Waco was nowhere to be found on the site. It's like they quit trying.

These days, it's rare to see decent 14U ball in Waco. Most 14U and above leave Waco to go play. The only time we get to see decent travel-ball in the area is at look-tourney's for Baylor, MCC, or UMHB.

It is Hewitt on Panther Way. David and Angela Granger donated a good bit of money to better the fields. They're a great family that wanted to help Midway Little League.

Broughton fields - I believe that may still be the case. Those fields are not in good shape at all. The Broughton's may have restricted any long-term improvement like turf.

Those fields are 50+ years old, and they still have huge rocks that come up out of the infield.

The Midway girls have had infinitely more success than the boys. IIRC they have about a 12 LLWS championships. It tough for me to watch the girls play in those conditions compared to the boy's field.

Does Lorena have consistently functioning bathrooms now? That septic system there was always a PROBLEM.

No.

Always, always backed up. The system isn't large enough for what it is used for.
If they didn't host tournaments every weekend and used it only for little league, it would be fine.

Lorena and Small Town Tournaments are definitely in lockstep because there is a major tourney there almost every week of the year. I will say, I never get more dirt-crusted and allergy ridden than I do after a weekend at Lorena. I coach 8U and we do a fair amount at Lorena over the course of the year and I always end up leaving looking a coal miner after a 36hr shift down in the holler.

Hard to get to? I always liked it because I didn't even have to go to Lorena to get there. From Spring Valley, you just take the county roads and they'll lead you right to it. Many places in Lorena, such as the land where the high school, middle school, elementary school, and little league baseball facilities are located were all land donations of old cow pastures. Accordingly, the little league field is kind of out there between Lorena and Bruceville.

I suppose I'm a little confused by your post. The Lorena tournament fields are the Lorena Little League ballfields. It's about a 2.5 drive down winding Old Bethany Rd. I could have used a better descriptor like, "out in the middle of nowhere."

I remember them from my childhood.

I played tee ball out there when I was a 5. They only had one ballpark and a concession stand out there at that time.
