For those of you that didn't know, Rob Schneider (you can DO it!) performed his standup at the Hippodrome on May 30.
My wife, her sister and husband, and I all had a great time. He uses a small band to warm-up the audience before he comes on to perform. They produced a Sinatra-esque sound with humor and style.
The not-shy-about-it conservative comedian performed for about 2-hours. He came out wearing match pin striped vest and pants. The back of his vest was an American flag.
Quite frankly, we all loved his show. His self-deprecating was spot on without being over the top. He talked about his family, politics, his Pilipino culture and heritage. He did a little audience interaction, but that wasn't the basis of his show.
Mid-set, he brought the band back out to perform with him. And to close the show he did a couple more songs. I was completely amazed with his voice. He is really good.
With respect to the venue, it no longer has the movie-style seats. They now use padded chairs in somewhat tight rows for this performance. My group and I ate dinner at Maria Mezcaleria, which is literally in the same building.
The food was good and reasonably priced. Drinks; however, were more than my dinner.
Pro-tip, if you do decide to pre-game your event (dinner/drinks) there, when finished, walk thru the door that leads to the bathrooms (turn left) and proceed into the theater. You completely avoid the line to get in. One other bonus to the Hippodrome, they have a bar upstairs. We brought another round into the venue to watch Rob perform.
All in all, we had a great time. I'd recommend his show if you are able to catch it in your town. For Waco, I'm glad to see the Hippodrome getting used to host entertainment rather than historical building be remodeled into downtown lofts.
