Building was Black Eyed Pea originally. Cotton Patch opened there when other restaurant left. I don't remember it being anywhere else in Waco.

I may be thinking of the Pea, then. Wife and I ate at Cotton Patch a lot around 94 when living in Ponca City

I was a pretty big fan of the Black Eye Pea. Prior to the one opening in Waco we would grab a meal at one of the ones in Dallas when we made day trips up there.

Steak & Ale. JT McCords. Cotton Patch. You're making my mouth water. I wish someone would raise the flag to Pancho's Mexican Buffet (I loved their chili rellenos and sopapillas).
- Sometimes you just gotta grin and bear it.

When wife and I were first married we ate at one in Missouri City TX a lot. Also a popular lunch spot during my PW days. Always liked it

We would eat there after church in the mid to late 90's.

Used to eat at the Dixie House in Dallas before it became Black Eyed Pea.

I remember the Dixie House up there as well. I remember it was identical to Black Eye Pea menu wise except the name. Because of this thread I was looking up Black EyePea yesterday for a second to see what came of it. If I recall from yesterday the chain is gone now. It was started in Dallas however and I did not realize it but there was only one Dixie House I think it said. I thought back in the late 80s there were a few of those in the Dallas area.

Wasn't Dixie House on Forest Lane near Central? My office at the time was in Park Central and we would eat there often. BEP owned Dixie House, which IIRC was just a tiny bit more upscale than BEP. Menu was the same, except that Dixie House didn't serve blackeyed peas.

I honestly just don't have a personal memory of where it was. I last went back around 1990. I just asked google where it was and it said near Gaston and Abram's and the photo of it was consistent with my very vague memories of what it looked like on the exterior. I perhaps only went 3 or so times to Dixie H. If we went to that kind of place in Dallas it was one of the Black Eyed Peas. Once the one in Waco opened we didn't really eat there anymore on day trips to Dallas.

Same ownership group.

The Lakewood location lasted 35-40 years. They were forced out by property management roughly ten years ago despite great business.

There was a Skeeter's right over there, too, if I remember correctly. We went after church to those pretty often with my in-laws especially when we were going to either FBC Sugar Land or later Sugar Creek.

There were at least 3 Dixie houses. If I were a betting person I would bet 4. Lakewood, Forest Ln, and McKinney Ave in Uptown. I think there was also one on NW Highway in the Bachman Lake area.

The big difference between Dixie House and BEP was that the meals at BEP came with 2 sides, while the meals at Dixie House came with 3 sides. I didn't need 3 sides, but I would eat them.

Had a great time at the Cancun location in the summer of 89.

Aren't those only in Mexican/Carribean resort towns and perhaps Miami has one? I think it is a Mexican chain.

Used to be one on Lake Travis. We would dock the boat and walk up for drinks and food.

I may have the name wrong. There was a JT McCords-type place close by on Valley Mills in the late 80s, and they served froglegs. If it's not Senor Frogs, what am I thinking of?

I'm stumped as well. However I am sure Waco never had a "Senor Frogs" out of the Mexico based chain.

I wondered if he was thinking that but it was that in the late 90s not around 89. It was called Le Beouff's or something. It was a Mexican place called Zapatas from 95-97 or so.

I think that's what I'm recalling, and they had frog legs on the menu. As I recall, at or near where Twenty Toes Photography is located (based on my viewing a map).

Oh well, I just re-confirmed I don't have photographic memory.

You are correct about Le Beouff's being in the old J.T. McCord's building. As they had a 'Louisiana' theme, it wouldn't surprise me that they may have offered frog legs on the menu.

I seem to recall their having alligator of some sort, although I never tried it. I stuck to the fried catfish the few times I went there before they closed.

Way, way, back in my memory I do recall an early 1980's place in the same block and on the same side of North Valley Mills drive as was J.T. McCords. It was located in a rather deep lot either directly to the south of J.T.'s, or perhaps a few more lots down.

I never went there, and I don't recall the name, but I do seem to remember that it was kind of a shack-y looking place, and offered seafood of some sort, and perhaps live music in the back.

That's all I've got, and I'll admit it isn't much.

Yes. North Valley Mills Dr. across from the old Taco Bell.

I think Underwood's took that property in the mid 1990's.
