The Baylor Line posted this article on the Best Tacos in Waco.

What's y'all's take and did they miss any must-eats?

I'm a big fan of Velvet Taco, but the taco purists might not even let it on the list.

Well it's a very Baylor centered list with only two or three of their spots being places where actual Mexicans would get a taco. Also, none of the places on the list require Spanglish which cuts out on many many fine establishments.

The first glaring omission to me is El Norteno on Dutton and 18th with the strongest pollo asada in town. I've never seen a Baylor student there or at Jimenez' with the best desserts in town next door either so I guess they get a pass there.

This board is usually a Zacatecas hater, but I think their lengua and their cabeza are quite good. Having a DT is great too.

As far as Velvet, we call those "Austin tacos" in our house and while we never really eat them, they're perfectly legit newstyle American tacos. If they make you happy then enjoy them.

Tacos can be so many things and prepared in so many ways. One thing we like to do is buy premade barabacoa by the pound at the butcher in the Mexican market by Hobby Lobby (their taqueria as has perfectly serviceable chile renellos ready to go most of the time). We'll eat that with some homemade corn tortillas (super easy and way better than store bought) and Rosa's flour tortillas. Easy taco spread for 10+ people.

Noooo evidence for that, babeeyyy, just maaade it up.

I've been ordering the chorizo and egg tacos from Taco Z regularly since 2010. It's still such a consistently great meal. Even though they keep raising their prices, it's still one of my favorite Waco lunches for under 8 bucks.

Norteno is great and has been doing it there for a long time now.

Agree re: Zacatecas.

Also well said re: the Austin taco genre. I like them. They're just a different thing. Probably fair to say that the original Torchy's truck on South 1st 20 years ago was about the beginning of the genre. I used to eat there frequently, along with doing a taco crawl all around that area. The original Taco Deli on spyglass deserves a mention, too. That entire movement deserves a lot of credit for taco awareness and development.
