Waco should get a Whole Foods Market. Seems like they are popping up in a lot of college towns in recent years. And if Shreveport can get one... Waco should get one.

Not sure "Whole Paycheck" would be financially viable in Waco

with Amazon merger prices have been dropping. I bet it would be viable.

No HEB's outside of Texas anymore.....

BTW if you are in a Whole Foods and have Amazon Prime you can scan it at checkout for HUGE discounts on a large number of items including meat/produce.....

Almost unsurprising...

The grocery store business is strange. It's hard to get a foothold for newcomers to a market. Whole Foods would never work in Waco because the demand simply doesn't exist. There isn't enough affluence to offset the HEB factor.

I doubt there are many places where a grocery store (HEB) not only competes with, but often beats Walmart in sales. Maybe it would work in Woodway, but people are loyal to HEB in Texas. My opinion is that it wouldn't be open for long.

We need a thread titled, "What would work in Waco?" I'm not sure the list would be that long. Top Golf would...absolutely, but if I was going to build a TG, I'd put it in Temple/Belton.

I said this many moons ago, even before A&M stole my idea...Baylor should partner with someone in building a hotel near the stadium. Bring in someone to manage/teach students in the hospitality industry.

I'm not sure Waco is big enough for Whole Foods. Instead, I hear Waco is getting a store called Half Foods.

if you include McLennan county (and Whole Foods would definitely pull from that area), you have over 250,000 people.

Shreveport has a WF and that county has 246,000

There is a nice new WF in Tallahassee, FL. That county is under 300,000.

If those stores are doing well, I bet it is only a matter of time before Waco gets one.

Central Market might work better as it is usually smaller. Waco/Baylor has the affluence to support Whole Foods, despite the relative cost increases for goods HEB doesn't carry. I spent $250 on cheese in one trip to Whole Foods once and it lasted about two weeks. I appreciated the ability to do such, despite it not being my wisest decision.

Lafayette, La Parish is under 250K and has a WF. I'm surprised it has made it down there, because that's a serious foodie area with tons of unique specialty grocers with things never seen in a WF.

WF is built for the pretend BS Austin type crowd that doesn't mind lower quality as long as it has some PC blessing and some aromatherapy associated with it. WF sells an image, not substance. (Only caveat is that they will cut up cow femur bones for me to serve bone marrow, but now I've found some other sources and don't have to go there just for that.)

Central Market may not be perfect, but it's >>>>>> WF.

All my dad's family is from the Shreveport area. I know what you're saying, but there's more to it than population. Two things: 1. Brookshire's (albeit a very nice Brookshire's) and Kroger are the competition for WF in that market. They don't have nearly the stronghold of HEB. 2. Bossier City, where the money now resides in the area, is 10 minutes away. That's easy driving for the affluent of that area.

Whole Foods wouldn't make it in Waco long.

UH been doing it with their Hilton on campus since the late 60s. They actually call it Hilton College and it is its' own school just like we have Arts and Sciences, Business, etc.

I agree and think that it would be a good idea. UH's school has a great job placement rate as well so it would be good for the kids that want to go that route.

True. It's mostly representative of the incompetency of Shreveport leadership. You can drive through the old, beautiful neighborhoods of Shreveport and see an astounding number of for sale signs. White flight is a very real problem for that city.

Shreveport does have an amazing brewery, though. Great Raft. I've been to countless breweries and it easily makes my top 3.

This is probably my biggest complaint about Texas in general. Our state is beholden to chains of all sorts. Of course, it's probably a statement on the country as a whole.

It is a country wide phenomenon. Accentuated in the suburbs and mid-sized cities especially. The consistency and scale and therefore relative value is tough for unique places to compete with for the most part. Chain can plop down a restaurant anywhere and helicopter in a training staff and back office HR with a ready made menu with economical supply chains built in from Day 1.

Would not last in Waco- at least, not for a while. HEB runs this town...and does a pretty good job, I must add. There simply aren't enough people in Waco that are willing to triple their grocery bill to buy locally-sourced, all-organic stuff.
