I'm starting to think the word "Amazon" is key here.

700,000 SF is a massive building. Even by Houston or Dallas standards. Kudos to Waco govt for helping this along

Waco needs to court the tech trade to go with SpaceX and Tesla 100 miles away. You can only go so wide until the hills and ranches keep you from developing.

What kind of amazon facility would this be? I assume a some sort of distribution facility?

What would that mean for Waco? Some slew of distribution jobs? Anything more than that?

That likely means great same day delivery for Waco!

My understanding is it will initially employee 600, steady growth in years 2-4.

So it will be a delivery warehouse like FedEx and UPS?

It'll look something like this - just a giant distribution hub.

Will supposedly employee 600+. Yes, a big chunk of those jobs will be starting at $15/hour but I've been told there will be a larger amount of higher paying jobs than your typical distribution center.

Was joking about the sign, but if Amazon comes in and since they own Whole Foods, I could see them doing it.

Likely net negative when considering the huge coming losses in retail.

LOL. But it fits. Our P.F. Changs only has one horse out front instead of the traditional 2. In their business model we are a one horse town.

Yep.

Amazon is not creating a whole new industry...like the railroads/trains did in the 1800s or the Personal computer industry in 1977...it is just cannibalizing an existing industry (traditional retail)

New industries create new jobs and new economic growth.

Amazon (like Walmart) swallows up an already existing industry...cuts down the labor pool...and centralizes the profits.

However you slice it, it's a big deal for Waco to get that distribution center. Otherwise, McLennan County gets all the negatives and none of the positives (except for the consumer benefits, which are significant, but are much more attenuated if you don't have a big distribution center in your town).

When I was on the east coast I had a lot of patients that worked at an amazon distribution center. Entry levels started at $20/hr. Bonuses at Christmas was usually some amazon stock. Was a good job for a lot of young people that had no intention on going to college or trade school. Cost of living was similar to Waco

Those wanting a program that might provide a career that pays more might want to consider the Tesla technician program at TSTC. https://www.tstc.edu/news/article5189

Agree.

I'm not against Waco getting the facility or taking the jobs.

I just wish Amazon and Walmart were actually new dynamic industries and not just centralization/cannibalism orgs.
