Is wasted with this defense.
With all those GA's and assistant coaches on that sideline, can anybody help with a defensive game plan?
Giving up the amount of points in the paint kills this teams chances.
Not sure how they will do a deep run in March.

A deep run in March is a pipe dream barring huge upsets in our region. This is a good but heavily flawed team. Whiffing on Lohner in the portal is killing us. He brings nothing. It's hard to think Turner wouldn't be a better option

Drew is not getting through to this team. I'm not sure how he can also address getting out coached two straight games either. This team is a complete mess. UT will kill them in Waco at this rate.

When an elite guard goes cold or is well defended, this team has no D to help offset.

Drew needs to find an alpha to come in next year to control the paint

You are incorrect Lohner brings nothing. Every time he touches the ball he brings another turnover.

Loaner is a massive miss, and will cost us a deep run. I HOPE I AM WRONGabout the deep run.

I have said this in other threads, but a deep run will depend our on matchups. We are awful defensively and more reliant on matchups than we've been in over 10 years. We are final 4 material if we get the right matchups but if we get paired against a team who can exploit our weaknesses (quick guards who can penetrate and get downhill, athletic bigs who can exploit Flo and EJ) then we are capable of getting bounced in the round of 32.

We're back down to 93rd in adjusted defensive efficiency, essentially undoing the modest progress we made during our 9-1 Big 12 run.

It's hard to see a team that defends as poorly as we do making a real deep run in the tournament. We basically have to be on offensively or we're going to get beat.

The problem is you're describing like 95% of tournament teams. Everyone in the Rd32 is going to have really really good guard play and athletic bigs. Hell there will be some mid majors in Rd64 with those types of teams.

I don't understand how George is such a deadlock one-and-done as one of the worst defensive guards among regular starters in the conference. He can fill up a stat sheet, but watch his movement defensively, he's borderline horrendous. I get that the NBA is an offensive league, but you still need to keep guys in front of you. George plays ole defense like he's a bullfighter in a Hemingway novel. When we're on the defensive end it looks like he's just mentally counting seconds until he can be on the other end of the court.

We can afford to have vanity players like George, but only if we have a steel backbone elsewhere. We just have a lot of guys who want to play cute and almost nobody who wants to roll around in the mud in crunch time. And the team that wins it in March is always the muddiest.

The NBA doesn't care much about defense, it's an offensive league and George is gifted offensively. You are correct though this is a finesse team. A bunch of guys who like to put up shots and score the rock and play zero defense or as you put it get in the mud.

No doubt. We are capable of beating anyone any given game, and almost anyone can beat us any given game. Wide range of possibilities depending on who we matchup with.

George is not that bad, he is a competent man to man defender when he locks in. But his effort level comes and goes. I agree he is awful in help side defense. In general looking at this team, I don't think it's a lack of *want to* as far as effort goes. I see guys like Flagler and Cryer trying their guts out, they are just not naturally gifted defenders and get beat by elite offensive players. EJ is doing his best but is a shell of his former self. Love tries hard but lacks lateral movement and anticipation. Contrary to popular belief, defense is not all about effort it also requires physical tools and natural instincts. We have too many weak individual defenders for Drew to hide them all.

They will look for tools. In theory there isn't anything keeping him from becoming a decent pro defender. Most front offices believe in their ability to develop guys especially when they are young which works in his favor.

He has decent size, the potential to put on huge strength (good frame), and has decent feet on offense. They will think they can clear it up with increased motivation and lateral work. Isn't wildly explosive but has adequate athleticism to get there.

I agree with this. I've said repeatedly that this is high-floor team because of its offense. But the complete lack of defense limits our ceiling considerably.

It is what it is. We beat virtually all the teams we should. But we're about a .500 team (9-8) in Quad 1 games this year. If you're an even bet every time you play someone good, you're a good team, not a great one.

Remove the Welcome mat in the paint and bring back Vital to coach a crash course on rough house dominant defense in the paint.

I have never seen a worse team at stopping the ball on the fast break. ANY team that increases the tempo will beat Baylor. Stopping the ball seems impossible for George and Cryer.

George may be one and done and that could be why he doesn't like to take a charge or play harder on defense.

George actually takes lots of charges, so that criticism is unwarranted. He has the ability to guard the ball as well (although the effort can be sporadic). His biggest struggle is help side defense and lack of awareness / mental lapses when defending off the ball.
