Surely that can't be.

Well another 8 months till the best combover in the big 12 is on the sidelines

Been a tough year for frog athletics. Historic. Never to be surpassed. But not in a good way

They played for the national championship in football while we went 6-7 and they split with us and reached the same round as us in basketball. Not sure we're in any place to dunk on the Frogs tonight.

Yeah. Weird OP post. They literally played in the title game. We were 6 and 6 and lost in their stadium to a military academy. Same exit in bball. Not sure why this is a thread.

Nah

They didn't play in a national championship. Surely you watched. They actually were so atrocious they single handedly became the forever standard of suck for a committee going Forward so nothing like that historic destruction with limited viewers could ever happen again. Everyone knew they didn't belong and they proved it. In historic fashion.

I was shocked to find they'd never made it out of the 2nd round

Why were you shocked to find that? TCU has been horrible for most of its history in men's basketball.

They've been good for most of Jamie Dixon's tenure and they're still 163 games under .500 for their history.

One would think in 130 years of basketball of the available opportunities it would have happened sometime.

You can even find times when their football team won a major conference football championship
And even a national title 100 years ago.

Even baylor had a national title appearance and final fours etc

I'm not much up on tcus basketball history prior to say 2011. FAU has A sweet 16 berth. Color me surprised

TCU reached the region final (Elite 8) in 1967-68 the region semifinals (Sweet 16) in 1951-52, 1952-53 and 1958-59. So they have made it that deep. They just did it when the field was smaller.

They've only reached the NCAA tournament six times since that 1967-68 season and have won exactly three tournament games over that span.

Hmm. So the commentators that said they'd never made a sweet 16 were wrong. Good to know

They probably meant in the current configuration with the expansion to 64 in 85

They "made the Sweet 16" back in the day without winning a single tournament game. Their region final appearance took one win.

In other words, Frog MBB has accomplished almost nothing noteworthy in the past 50 years!

TCU blew their chance to become relevant a long time ago by not hiring a Naismith hall of fame coach right in their back yard. Coach Robert Hughes of Dunbar High who is the all time winningest boys high school coach in the United States.

TCU was the only college job he was interested in because he wanted to stay in fort worth.
TCU went with Jim Killer Killingsworth instead

Dunbar High used to sell out Daniel Meyer during the high school regionals

Killingsworth was awesome. Won back to back conference championships with the help of then player Jamie Dixon. Oddly enough, tying for first place and going 12-4 in the SWC got you a NIT bid back in the day. Frogs have been overall terrible at basketball since day one.

The record of Texas (i.e. State of Texas) schools in the men's NCAA BBall Tournament in general has been historically dismal. In 2021 Baylor became only the second Texas based school to win the men's tourney all time. The other was UTEP in 1967 (called ""Texas Western" at the time).

A few stats since the Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985 (with this year's final results still pending of course):

Texas Tech and Baylor are the only two Texas schools to play in a national championship game to date, each doing it once (the UH "Phi Slamma Jamma" teams happened in '83 & '84).

UT, Texas Tech, Baylor, and UH are the only Texas schools to get to a Final Four, each doing it once.

The aggys have never made it past the sweet 16.

As previously noted, TCU has never made it past the round of 32.

It's true that football has always been "king" in the state of Texas, but you would think with all of the great basketball talent that has come out of the state (especially in recent decades) and with all of the investment in high end coaches that the results would be far better.

The 1987 TCU team with Carven Holcombe and Dixon at PG was pretty salty. BU with Middleton/M Williams/McLemore/et al finished second in the league to them. IIRC the game in Waco was the first sellout in years other than the curiosity factor to see Phi Slama Jama in 83 and 84.

Much like us yesterday, TCU got tripped up in the 2nd round by Notre Dame that year. Killingsworth retired, they hired Moe Iba (Gene's cousin and Henry's son, with all the personality and charm of a clump of topsoil) and went into a 25-30 year hibernation.

Didn't Carven Holcombe play HS ball at Ft Worth Dunbar? Robby can probably answer this question but I think he did.

Yates High
Correct. Yates had 2 big dogs back then: everybody was chasing Rickie Winslow, who went to UH and was a freshman on the last Phi Slama Jama team that lost to Ewing and Georgetown in the 1984 finals. Killingsworth didn't go after Winslow but put all his efforts into courting Holcombe. Once Olajuwon/Young/Micheaux moved on, Winslow never really developed. Meanwhile Holcombe became a beast by his senior year.
