The president basically kneecapped their season by going over Tang's head to release this kid and then forced the AD to be the fall guy for it in the release, all while Tang had put this young man through the ringer in order to get back on the court, a process he dutifully complied with.CST Bear said:

Tang signed a new $20mm contract a few months ago. This is a huge commitment from a school with limited means budget wise. A number of College Presidents will be entering the job market soon. As they said at Tech when they had Bob Knight, it's a lot easier to find a new College President or Chancellor than it is a winning Big 12 basketball coach.JP1037 said:
Strange situation. I trust Jerome Tang. I would do everything possible to make him successful if I were KSU.
That being said, I would like to see him out of the Big 12 for our benefit. If this is a push out the door then that is not such a bad thing for us.
I don't think he will leave and I don't think a public apology from the prez is required. I think tang will expect and get a personal apology and will then deliver notice that if he interferes again he will leave.parch said:The president basically kneecapped their season by going over Tang's head to release this kid and then forced the AD to be the fall guy for it in the release, all while Tang had put this young man through the ringer in order to get back on the court, a process he dutifully complied with.CST Bear said:

One thing about Tang that I know from Drew - if you interfere with their ability to run their program in what they perceive as the upright and moral way, they will not stay. Coaches coach for different reasons, but Tang is absolutely the type who views it as a Christian calling, and he just had his whole ethos compromised in one fell swoop.
Unlike some jumpy KSU fans I don't think Tang is the type to leap at any opportunity. I think his loyalty to Drew/Baylor for so many years speaks for itself. But he's leaving unless the president admits fault and clears the rift, and I think the likelihood of that is pretty slim.

Either way, a President who makes that call is unlikely to give a true apology.LIB,MR BEARS said:I don't think he will leave and I don't think a public apology from the prez is required. Tang has principles but no ego so I don't think the apology needs to be public.
Agreed. It's interesting how relationships (including with the employer) work. This may not send Tang rushing out the door. But it likely tears the fabric a bit and increases the likelihood he moves along at some point.
Its normal that those of us who admire Coach Tang would look negatively toward the President, and this one in particular could use PR assistance, but a thought came to me this morning: if we had 12 years ago an annoyingly overactive University President and Administration demanding final approval on player infractions, Art Briles would still be coaching--somewhere if not Baylor.Robert Wilson said:Either way, a President who makes that call is unlikely to give a true apology.LIB,MR BEARS said:I don't think he will leave and I don't think a public apology from the prez is required. I wasn't talking about a public apology, merely one face-to-face. And based on the fact that the president tampered with Tang's program in the most directly overt way possible, I think an apology is not likely. He knew what he was doing.LIB,MR BEARS said:I don't think he will leave and I don't think a public apology from the prez is required. From what I have seen of Oklahoma State, kind of surprised they didn't make a run at him.DanaDane said:
VERY happy he didn't end up at KU, or even WVU for that matter.

Nobody is saying Tang is leaving before the season is over, but these rifts grow, and unless remediation happens behind closed doors Tang will find more fertile ground in the coming years.
