I got the sense from a summer podcast that he wasn't likely to return until "mid-season," but Drew's media session suggested to me they were expecting him to be cleared for practice soon. Hopefully that means he can return to game action sooner than I feared. We will certainly need him to compete against some of our headline non-con opponents, and we need to get him integrated into the team as soon as possible to give us the best chance to compete in the Big 12. Very much looking forward to having rim protection again this year between him and Caden Powell (and Rataj and some of our other wings that should be good help defenders).

That's why I confused by your post in the other thread. If you look at the photo in Joe Tipton's tweet, he's standing there (#21) in the standard practice shorts and shirt with no visible injuries to his arms, legs or elsewhere as if he's been practicing. Of course, you can have internal injuries that keep you out, so I assumed if he was going to be out that long it must have been something along those lines.

I got that info from a report by Ashley over the summer. It's possible I misheard or misremembered it, but to me the report sounded bleak, and I'm pretty sure he said something like "mid-season." Perhaps he can clarify if he doesn't mind doing so on this free board (though I'm not holding it against him if not --- I understand this is a business).

I'm not doubting you or thinking you just made it up. I was just confused that you were posting that at the same time Tipton posted his tweet, which showed Bodo Bodo standing in the huddle. Him standing there doesn't mean he actually practiced. He could have been working on some type of PT while they were actually practicing. And, as I said, not all injuries are visible so he still could very well be out for awhile.

I hope not because from the little of scrimmage clips I've seen Soyoye is extremely green and will have to adjust to the physical nature at this level and I saw enough of Powell the past few years to know he's a back-up who can give some minutes. In my mind, Bodo Bodo is a huge key defensively for this team to compete at a top half of Big 12 level.

in pre-exhibition presser, Drew says that in two weeks they will know "if and when" Bodo Bodo will return this season. That suggests to me the two options on the table are (1) coming back some time later in the season significantly after the start; or (2) not being able to come back soon enough to make it worth it to burn the season---i.e., out for the season.

I sure hope that it's (1) b/c that significantly impacts the ceiling for this team.

After what I saw in the scrimmage today I can honestly say our ceiling becomes much lower in Big 12 play without a physical presence like Bodo Bodo in the paint. I didn't watch Rataj much at OSU so I mistakenly thought he was a physical PF. I was wrong. He is definitely a finesse guy. Powell can get physical, but he is a 10-15 max role guy. Soyoye is more physically developed in person than what I saw on videos, but he is very, very, very raw. He fouled out in less than 10 minues. I think it's evident the staff had a desire to potentially redshirt him but if Bodo Bodo can't go then they probably won't be able to do that.

We are gonna miss Josh much more than I thought.

Josh was not going to play until December at best anyway due to torn ACL back on February 8. Heck he could sit out this season and recover from the torn ACL. Torn ACL's are no joke to come back from. Last thing you want to do is rush a guy too early from a torn ACL.

Good point. I forgot all about Josh's injury. While his was nowhere near the severity of Jonathan's, any knee injury is difficult to establish an accurate expected timeline because you don't want to come back too early and risk re-injuring.

Still, my point stands. From what I saw Friday, our ceiling lowers quite a bit if Bodo Bodo misses the whole season. We have minimal presence in the paint and that's not a good thing defensively in a physical conference like the Big 12.

What is wrong with the guy? This program simply cannot keep a good big healthy.

Don't think Josh would have been any good until at least Jan/Feb anyway.. and Bodo Bodo has so much more potential than Josh. Much higher upside player that we probably won't see even this year even if he plays since developement time is limited with injury.

I really thought this roster (with strong coaching) could be a poor man's Florida. Extremely versitile group, good length and athleticism, that can create a lot of matchup issues. Without Bodo Bodo, that doesn't really work in the same way. Our other bigs are nice backup pieces but not enough.

Yes Bodo Bodo was recruited to be our starting 5, and I'm sure his $$ matches that. He had an offseason injury doing some kind of ATV or recreational activity from what I recall hearing. Really hoping they find out he can play by Big 12 play. The good news, if there is any, is that I believe it's an upper body not a lower body injury, so I wouldn't think his athleticism will be compromised like in the plague of our knee injuries.

NY Times/Athletic article basically says he has a shoulder injury.

It takes one heck of a summer shoulder injury to keep a player out for an entire year. My goodness. Really hoping we get some good news on him soon. So many of these players will only be here for one year, and basketball is a different sport when you have a first rate rim protector and rebounder.

Yup. I saw multiple guys who can create shots during the scrimmage last Friday and in the World University games. So I think we're fine there. What I didn't see is significant physical presence underneath on D. Don't get me wrong, Caden will battle and give his all as a role player but I just think we're gonna need a lot more than just him when we play strong teams in a physical conference like the Big 12.

Staff
he has nerve damage to his wrist that is all related to his ATV accident before he arrived on campus. I think the most likely outcomes at this point are either a redshirt with Mayo Soyoye playing a bigger role than expected (he's been surprisingly good and brings a lot of the same qualities as Bodo Bodo) or Bodo Bodo is possibly ready to play later in the year. All things considered, it's a tough outcome especially when coupled with the ACL injury to freshman Maikcol Perez who was likely going to be one of our top 8 guys.

Crazy. Program has the most freak injuries of any in the country the last 5 yrs. Was a critical piece and sounds like it will be the whole year.. and if not will have zero development in a high D1 program before game time.

Not something you can run back either as Tounde, Skillings, Obi, and Rataj are all out after this year.

If Colleges are going to continue to commit (albeit indirectly) millions of $ to a player, they may want to think about an insurance policy.

With our luck over the last 4 years (and counting), who would agree to insure us?

There's a cost to insurance. Insurance companies generally make a net profit. So insurance is not a money saver. It's only benefit is the avoidance of a cost that would be quite disruptive to the insured. Given the athletic spend of major universities, the loss of a basketball player would not be financially disruptive to such a university. Thus, universities would be wise not to waste money on insurance for its basketball players.

Another reason to have contracts with players. Contracts prohibit high risk activities like ATVing and make the contract cancellable if the players violates. My guess is we are stuck paying this kid for getting himself hurt.
