Don't get me wrong, I love that we're getting some attention in the KenPom preseason ratings, but KenPom is about as worthless as pockets on underwear until a minimum of about 10 games are played. For the model to be effective it needs cross hybrid data that can only be derived through a reasonable sample of current season games before any correlative data can be reasonably observed.
It's less worthless than the AP poll or Big 12 preseason awards, both of which apparently forgot that Baylor had a team at all.
I don't think they forgot us. It's just tough to tell with us given that we replaced an entire roster so there's no way to know how well they will all meld together. It's also another reason why statistical models like KenPom's serve little value to start the year because it can't measure how well new players will fit together and in today's world 50% roster turnover per year or more is becoming the norm, although Kelvin has proven to be one who has been able to keep his rosters close to intact at UH.
If we get Bodo Bodo back quickly, I think we have a shot at being one of the bigger surprises. But I kinda like the fact we start unranked and picked 7 in preseason conference polls. Maybe it will let the team become cohesive without all the added pressure. We fans may have to overlook an early non-conference blowout game or two like we've experienced over the past few years with Virginia, Marquette, Michigan St and Gonzaga and stay hopeful for the longer term results.

I think this has a lot to do with how much KenPom expects the defense to improve under Ron Sanchez.

I don't think the Sanchez hire has been talked about enough. After losing so many assistants over the years, this hire was a home run and much needed.

Was at the Houston vs Auburn game yesterday here in Birmingham. Houston pulled it out in a very hostile environment. The Flemings freshman PG for Houston is going to give a lot teams trouble. Don't really know what to think of Auburn (post elder Pearl) as of yet, but they hung with Houston even though the Cougs didn't bring their best stuff. Houston is going to take care of most Big 12 teams.

We fell quite a bit on the defensive efficiency side from around 30th pre-tourney to 77th after the 3 games. Although, as I point out above, one or two games can cause large variational impacts until you get to around 10 games played so I expect that number to improve dramatically over the next few games. At least my eyes see a lot more contested shots with hands in faces than I saw last year.

It was the 50% and 42% from 3PT by SJ and SDSU. The sample size does swing a lot early in the season, but if they give up 40%+ from 3P, our defensive efficiency will continue to be on the lower end of top 100.
Where some randomness occurred was in giving up the 3 free throws at the end of the first half and the three 3s that SDSU made in the last 30 seconds of the game.
With those 12 points SDSU scored 1.14 points per possession (81 points/71 possessions) for the game (mediocre defense). Back out those four possessions and SDSU averaged 1.02 points per possession (69 points/67 possession) for the game (good enough to win vast majority of games).

Last year offense was 16 and defense was 62. That was before we brought in a defensive specialist coach.
I see a lot more effort on the defensive end this year than last year but the results aren't showing yet.
Getting another healthy big will help I hope plus the guys learning the rotations and help a bit better.
So far our defense is booboo. If this team doesn't figure out how to play team defense sooner than later, we are in a for frustrating conference play this year
Agree. Feel like a healthy actual true big man like Bodo Bodo would have helped immensely, and at least we look like we're much more active on D so far this year. I keep telling myself to be patient, but I still have bad scars from the past 3 years convincing myself in November that we would get better on D as the year went along and unfortunately we never did. Hopefully Sanchez helps that belief come true this year. I don't know that we have the pieces to be great on D, but hopefully we can be serviceable enough that it allows our scoring on offense to propel us in some of the games against the top half of the Big 12.
Obviously the players see the shortcomings and, not just the coaches but, the players themselves are addressing them.

This is why I still have hope for this group.. that and Sanchez. In previous years, the guys would parrot the coaches that they were improving on D yet didn't show any urgency (other than VJ).
I've heard multiple guys this year already say we weren't good enough and we need to get it fixed.. unsolicited. Doesn't mean it will work but huge difference in mentality.
