Yep. I know it's an exhibition game, but this looks like it's going to be a fun BU team to watch.

Scrappy bunch. Reminded me a lot of some of Kelvin's guys over the years and how they play. We looked pretty small compared to Florida when Bodo Bodo wasn't on the floor but we have some guys who play pretty darn physical. Not afraid to mix it up for the first time in several years and I like it! Really need Powell to retain his eligibility though. Another big body would be great.

Yeah - it was refreshing to see a BU bball team actually getting after it on the defensive end. Hope that becomes a common sight this season. I know Powell didn't play today (noticed him in street clothes on the bench), but I thought it had already been determined that he will be eligible this season(?).

I'm an awful reference on this. I'm sure there are others who are much more knowledgeable about it. But, from what I understand, he was granted a preliminary injunction back in July but that injunction was stayed in October. Then the Ohio Supreme Court ruled several days ago in the athletes favor so I think he's technically eligible again.

Since it's an exhibition game and doesn't really matter, I wonder if Drew just kept him out to see what we looked like and/or could accomplish with Chatman, E. Williams and Perez going to the 5 at times, just in case someone pulls the plug on Powell and all the 5th year seniors later on.

Must be really difficult on coaching staffs around the country right now because they don't know whether they have some of these guys for the whole year or if at any time the player gets snatched away by the courts. I'm glad Drew only went down the pike for 1 guy like this. There are some schools that have 2-4 pivotal guys they don't know will be available all year.

Watched some of this. Kayden was excellent. Great pace, tight handle, and an advanced midrange game. Missed three straight free throws at the end of regulation that could've iced it, but kept his head in the game.

Bodo Bodo is still a wait-and-see. His rim protection wasn't great, and the footwork and timing were off. Hopefully, that's just rust. Tough to judge a guy who hasn't played in a long time against a frontcourt that good. He did get better as the game went on.

The complementary pieces are solid in their roles, but they'll need another featured guy to step up alongside Kayden.
  • Williams: Quiet 17, efficient and smart - No TO's. Good performance.
  • Decker: Struggled with the level of competition. Still early, but we'll see if he can develop into a secondary ball handler/playmaker or if he's more of the spot-up shooter we originally expected.
  • Mingo: Will contribute even when he's not scoring. Brings consistent energy, a good first step, developing handle, and great size. If he develops a shot, there's big upside. Continues the tradition of our guards being among the best rebounders in the country for their size.
  • Celiscar: Has decent tools and a chance to make a jump with this staff. Will contribute outside of scoring
  • Chatman: Could fill an energy role at Iowa State or Houston. Took a lot of threes and didn't hit them today, but if he can knock those down, he'll open things up.
Overall, missing two solid bigs against what will probably be the best frontcourt in college basketball and still winning is always a positive.

Defense was solid - they compete.. but Florida also missed some pretty open threes. Everyone contested better, though their percentage was a mix of good defense and Florida just missing shots. That said, teams tend to miss more when the initial defense is good. In past years, teams got comfortable against us by making open shots early, then started hitting tougher ones all game.

Illinois will be interesting. They won't miss that many open looks, and they'll really test this defense.

Decker is much shorter than I was expecting. Kinda worries me about his ability to get off shots against physical, taller guards in the Big 12. Rob Wright obviously isn't tall either, but he has speed and athleticism that I don't see in Decker. But I've always thought of Decker more in line with like a Heslip role where you bring him off the bench and if he's hitting you keep him in, otherwise back to the bench. The two Mingo brothers and Isaac should be fine handling the guard duties with Decker spelling them on occasion.

He has a running gag on his podcast about fans putting too much emphasis on exhibition results so since we took at #1, he's being his snarky usual self.

That's what it looks like right now. Earlier, I'd heard some rumblings that he might be a surprise contributor maybe a poor man's Flagler. I've been burned before putting too much stock in this site's and other observers' assessments, so I'll default back to the expectations when he originally signed.

It's still early, and there's time to develop. But in this game, the speed of play seemed a little too much for him, and he never really adjusted. That last-minute turnover that gave Florida a chance was really bad. He also doesn't seem to have much confidence in his handle right now.

I'm not one to knock guys early just making an objective observation. Its extremely early.. I hope the reports from some on this site about his secondary playmaking are accurate. I still think he can be a solid player for this team, and Heslip would be an excellent comp for him to try to match.

I was happy to see that Elijah Williams looked physically ready for this level of basketball. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised given his dad's background. Last year it was obvious when I first saw Iguodola in the World games that he would need a couple of years to build his body to adjust to the physicality of this level of ball.

I did think it was funny when Patrick Young, the former Florida player now broadcaster, was talking about him and a light bulb went off in his head as he remembered shooting baskets with Monty's little kid years ago at practice and then realized it was Elijah. ha

31 points against Florida is impressive any way you slice it.

Bodo bodo 7 rebounds seems somewhat promising that he can at least contribute there. I don't know Florida's lineup this year but they have had one of best front courts in country last couple years.

Bodo Bodo is gonna be pivotal on the defensive end and simply from his size for this team to overachieve. He is a big body and we are an overall short and small team when he is not on the court. The only offense to expect from him will be putbacks on offensive boards he gets but he will be pivotal with his size to help set picks that will get Isaac, Dylan and Kaden to the lane. Florida's Chinyelu is a huge dude. Bodo Bodo was right there battling against him. He'll have to be careful because he showed today what I noticed the few times I saw him in High Point games -- he tends to pick up some not-so-smart fouls. Still, as I mentioned earlier, we will be a better team if Powell can also play so that we have 2 true big guys available. Don't know anything about Soyoye yet or how far along he is. I know he's been out with a foot issue.

I just watched the full game highlights. The thing that jumped out at me was depth. Last year we had no depth and it showed as we usually wore down against good teams.

I don't think we'll be able to play Decker against anyone with a pulse. We win this game in regulation if he doesn't turn the ball over. I think Bodo Bodo will settle in. He got a pretty rough whistle today in some situations where I thought he was in good position defensively. Chatman was a surprise. If he can shoot the 3 at a decent clip it's bonus, but he was good defensively and on the boards. We got cleared out too many times down low to give up layups, need to clean that up.

Baylor faces 6600 minutes of regular season regulation time (2640 at guard). Decker needs to play well enough to absorb about 400-500 of those minutes. The law firm of Mingo Mingo and Williams will cover the bulk of the remaining 2000ish remaining guard minutes. Celiscar Williams & Chatman do the same at W/F with Perez possibly in the Decker role due merely to size. The (hopefully) three headed monster covers all the post minutes. Avoid illness and injury and that rotation is solid.

Unfortunately the drop off after those three player rotations is likely significant.
