WNBA All-Star and Olympic champion Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia on drug smuggling charges after she was found with vape cartridges in her carry-on luggage at a Moscow airport, according to Russian news sources.

Russia's Interfax news agency said a female US basketball player was arrested in February, at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow after arriving on a flight from New York.

A drug sniffing dog indicated narcotics in luggage, and when the bag was X-rayed, "so-called 'vapes'" were discovered "with a specific order," according to Interfax, which cited the Russian Federal Customs Service.

"The expert found that the liquid is a narcotic drug cannabis oil (hashish oil)," Interax said.
The independent Russian news website identified the player as Griner.

USA Basketball did not immediately respond to a request for information. Griner hasn't posted on her Instagram account since Feb. 5.

Griner, 31, a member of the 2014 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury and the 2016 Olympics gold medal team, has played during the WNBA off-season for the Russian team Ekaterinburg in the Euroleague since 2015.

I hope she can get out of Russia. Bad time to be on the wrong side of any western, Russian equation. But one wonders how she could be so ignorant of Russian law. She seems to fall into one tragedy of her own making after another, Still a lost soul looking for an anchor, an answer. Mulkey was that answer for four years then, lost again. Pray she is released soon!

Not the time to be an American in Russia and definitely not the time to be an American in Russia and be arrested for anything.

I'm especially fearful for her given her being LGBTQ+. Hopefully she can get out of Russia.

All of us can be quite stupid, at times. Grace? Luck? Mercy? Divine intervention? I was a pretty straight-laced, risk-adverse young person, especially with respect to drugs and alcohol (thus being dubbed a stick in the mud, by my friends, who none the less remained my friends), and yet, there are times now, I look back on some decisions I made and some of the possible consequences that DIDN'T happen, and break out in a cold sweat. There but for the grace and mercy of God, go I..

It is certainly fair to be critical of her lack of judgment, but I hope, at the same time, we are all uttering a prayer for her. She is going to need them.

Did I miss a confession that was not coerced? If you weren't trying to make a political statement, at a time of deadly tension between Russia and the rest of the world, why would you arrest someone? All the times she has traveled, why now? Calling her stupid? The bad judgment would be she wasn't out weeks ago. I think she's pretty easy to pick out in a crowd.

For BG as an example we love she won us a championship but we don't like she is LGBTQ+ so we do not support that part of her but we love when she won us ball games. Athletes in general in the country we only like when they win us ball games but when they use a voice or a platform to speak out on topics that have impacts on thieve community we want them to hush and just win ball games.

Whoa -- speak for yourself there. There are many who support that "part" of her being LGBTQ+ as you put it. Now, if you are speaking of Baylor in general, well even the university has evolved significantly on this issue to the point of being on the precipice of allowing an LGBTQ student organization on campus and the ban on "homosexual" acts being removed from the handbook and its announcement earlier this year that LGBTQ Bears are part of the Baylor family and deserve its support.

She isn't the first. American citizen in the past few months detained for innocuous drugs in her luggage. They have three or four this far that we know of. Don't rush to judge Brittany. She and the others are likely pawns for negotiations down the road and I said this before reading the article. Some of us sure do show our own biases with even the tiniest opportunity.

If i was in Russia right now i can't say i wouldn't want some too with all the anxiety i would be going through dealing with that situation
