Man this game is just way too painful to watch right now. Not sure I've seen a worse team than Tech.

But Oklahoma isn't pulling away as they should. Sherri Coale is a good coach but they have no talent right now. The future is not bright in Norman.

Texas 77 @ TCU 79

"Kianna Ray made two free throws with 6 seconds left and TCU beat a Top 10 team for the first time in more than eight years, upsetting No. 7 Texas 79-77 on Wednesday night.

Ray was fouled by Ariel Atkins on a drive to the basket. That came after Atkins tied the game, and the second time in the final 38 seconds the two traded baskets. Atkins had made a short runner in the lane before Ray's open 3-pointer put the Frogs up 77-75. A final desperation 3 by Lashann Higgs was way off the mark as the game ended.

Jordan Moore led TCU (11-5, 2-3 Big 12) with 19 points, and Ray had 17. Toree Thompson had 13 points and Amy Okonkwo had 12.

Atkins had 25 points and Higgs 18 for the Longhorns (13-2, 4-1). They had won six straight.

TCU had lost its last 13 games against ranked teams, and hadn't beaten a Top 10 team since a 56-54 home victory over No. 10 Texas A&M on Dec. 12, 2009.

Big picture
Texas The Longhorns were streaky shooters, making eight in a row early and having those 11 misses in a row in the second quarter. Twice in the third quarter, they made four in a row.

TCU The Frogs had been competitive in their Big 12 games. They led in the fourth quarter in two of their three losses, including against then-No. 9 West Virginia at home in their conference opener two weeks ago."

"The moments of confusion, of hesitation, of quiet, they're occurring less often for K-State women's basketball. As a result, scoring is becoming more and more difficult for the Wildcats' opponents.

K-State held its last three opponents No. 24 Oklahoma State, No. 12 West Virginia and No. 8 Texas to an average of 17.8 points below their respective scoring average coming into their game against the Wildcats. Those three opponents also combined to shoot a frigid 23.9 percent (16-of-67) from 3-point range against K-State.

The Wildcats' defensive progress, according to sophomore forward Peyton Williams, started with a commitment to communication.

"We're learning that playing hard means talking and opening your mouth, being engaged on not just playing physically but also mentally, and speaking is part of that. I think as we progress we are learning to move and talk outside of ourselves. That has been helpful the past couple of games," she said. "I remember in the OSU game we had some confusion several times, like who's taking whose man and there was a player open constantly on transition (defense). That's been happening less and less because we're just talking and playing better in that regard."

Despite some confusion, K-State limited Oklahoma State to a season-low shooting percentage (.365) while also forcing 17 turnovers, a season-high for the Cowgirls.

The Wildcats followed that with its best defensive performance. They held West Virginia to a season-low 52 points en route to the Wildcats' first ever win in Morgantown.

K-State's zone defense, rooted in players talking to one another, most recently allowed a versatile Texas squad to put up only 75 points, which tied for its season-low scoring total. The Longhorns started the game 2-for-10 from the floor and finished with 18 turnovers.

"(Communication) is very important in a zone, especially when you have a lot of cutters through the back side," Williams said, pointing out the challenge presented to K-State's two freshmen centers, Mary Lakes and Ashley Ray. "When they come in, they have to talk a lot because the guards are playing blind up top, essentially, with the cutters. So communication is pivotal for a zone defense. We've learned that, and sometimes the hard way."

During the winter break, K-State's coaching staff has made a concerted effort to improve the Wildcats' communication. Some of that, K-State head coach Jeff Mittie said, has meant simplifying certain parts of the game.

"If you're not communicating at either end of the floor, you're really not playing as hard as you're capable of and you're really not helping your teammates play very well," Mittie said. "We've tried to change some rules for them to simplify that."

Part of the Wildcats' biggest hurdle, in terms of communication, has been a lack of confidence that stems from inexperience. Currently, K-State has only three players on its roster who have played more than one year in its system.

"As a veteran you have the confidence to speak up. You have the confidence to say, 'I'm taking the ball or I'm rotating here.' As a young player, you're, like, 'Should I take the ball? Should I do this?'" said Mittie, whose message has been the following: "Make a decision. Live with the result. Everybody can play around that.

"It is an adjustment as a coach, not in terms of holding them accountable to the standard, but knowing that the timeline of this may not match up. So our job is, how do we simplify things? How do we get them to play as fast as they can? How do we simplify some of the things that we're doing so they can confidently understand it?"

Coming off the toughest four-game stretch to open Big 12 play in the conference's history, in terms of the opponents' average rank, Mittie said the improvement must continue because nothing will come easy in this league.

"Every night in the Big 12 has its own challenges," he said. "So while this stretch was stacked with a lot of teams that had played well in the non-conference, we know the next 14 games are going to have challenges as well."

I think that whole program has some problems. Time for a top to bottom refresh. Their whole roster is made of other school's castoffs. That isn't really a recipe for success and the result is one of the worst Big 12 teams in recent memory.

A perspective from an Oklahoma newspaper writer
March 6, 2016

Why the sizzle has been sapped from the Sherri Coale - Kim Mulkey rivalry

"Moments before their teams hit the hardwood at the Big 12 women's basketball tournament, Sherri Coale and Kim Mulkey met at halfcourt for the customary head coaches' handshake. They held the shake. They exchanged a few words, Coale nodding her head and Mulkey patting her arm. Darned if they didn't act like they liked each other.

The spitfire has gone out of this rivalry. It's a crying shame.

There were years when Oklahoma's Coale and Baylor's Mulkey looked like oil and water when they shook hands before games. Neither wanted anything to do with the other. Either that or they were worried about taking a shank in the side. These two didn't like each other, and it made for grand theater.

For all we know, they still don't like each other, but these days, they're acting more like high school classmates who've grown up and realized how silly it was to hate each other.

I blame it on the scoreboard. Baylor 84, OU 57.

Sunday was the 12th time in 13 games that the Bears triumphed over the Sooners. What was once a fair fight has gone green. Some of that is on OU and Coale the Sooners haven't had a team that could truly be called elite since its back-to-back Final Four teams in 2009 and 2010 but much of the credit goes to Baylor and Mulkey. They have distanced themselves from pretty much every other program in this part of the country.

Sunday's semifinal was a prime example of why. The Bears used nine players, and every time someone different came in, they were every bit as skilled and athletic as the player they replaced.

"We have so much depth, guys," Mulkey said. "That's why we didn't get any of the Big 12 awards. Let's be honest. Who are you going to pick?"

The Baylor women are like the Kansas men, using so many interchangeable players that you forget who's out there but dominating in the process. The Bears have gotten so good that the intrigue has gone out of their games against the Sooners. The sizzle has been sapped from the rivalry.

Ditto for the Coale-Mulkey kerfuffle.

I'm not saying every ounce of animosity is gone. Last season at the Big 12 tournament, it looked like Baylor and OU would meet in finals. Asked after her team's semifinal win if she got fired up to play against other top coaches like Coale, Mulkey was curt.

"No, not for me," she said. "I don't shoot it, I don't pass it, I don't dribble it. It's just another game."

But as another question was being asked, Mulkey made an addendum.

"Your adrenaline might get a little bit higher if you're playing for a national championship," she said.

Not-so-subtle stab at Coale?

At the very least it was a jab.

Of course, Coale isn't immune to throwing a little fuel on fire. Last season when OU ended a four-plus year drought against Baylor, Coale ran onto the court after the final buzzer, emphatically pumped her fists and hollered "That's what I'm talking about!"

Coale never reacts that way.

Mulkey on the other hand ...

There was a moment late in the first half Sunday with Baylor already running OU ragged when the Bears got whistled for a foul in the post. Mulkey stomped her platform heels down the sideline, her hands in her hair, her face contorted in disbelief.

At the other end of the court, Coale had the biggest smile on her face.

Of course, after the game, she was nothing but complimentary to Mulkey and Bears.

"They have a terrific team, and they played well today," Coale said. "Their shooting numbers were fantastic, and ours weren't so good, and we lost to a better team."

Praising each other's teams? Smiling at each other? Acting civil and cordial and, well, nice to each other?

It's entirely understandable ... and entirely boring."

With the BU win today, BU now leads the all-time series against OU 26-25.

When OU beat BU in the semis of the 2009-10 Big12 tournament, OU led the series 24-11.

Hi Brother Pale Rider,
I appreciate your kind words.

I would like to post more pressers. Sometimes it takes Nancy Drew training to obtain WBB post-game videos. Unlike the box score, the videos are not an automatic post on many WBB website pages for each game.

I was trying to find the video post-game presser for Texas Tech @ TCU to hear TT new interim head coach Shimmy Gray-Miller. According to Jada Butts of Summitt Hoops, there was no media availability at TCU after the game.

The search continues

"Oklahoma State's Areanna Combs will miss the remainder of the 2017-18 season due to injury it was announced today by Cowgirl head coach Jim Littell.

Combs, a sophomore guard, suffered the injury in OSU's contest at Texas on Jan. 3. The Oklahoma City native started the Cowgirls' first 14 games this season, averaging 8.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest.

"We are extremely disappointed for Arie, who has worked so hard to earn a starting position and become a key contributor for our program," Littell said. "She had successful surgery on Friday and we are eager to help her through the recovery process."
