"Iowa State women's basketball freshman Ashley Joens was announced as an addition to the USA Basketball U18 team today.

Joens was originally named one of six alternates, but her strong showing at tryouts earned a spot to compete with the team later this summer.

Joens is the first Cyclone to be named to any USA Basketball roster. Joens, who hails from Iowa City, Iowa, was named Iowa's Gatorade Player of the Year and Miss Basketball. She averaged 30.7 points, 11.4 rebounds and shot 61.8 percent from the floor in her senior campaign at City High. Joens also earned an invitation to compete in the Jordan Brand Classic game for her efforts."

What happened to Egbo on this team? Just looked at the U-18 roster and see NaLyssa and the new girl above but no Queen. Was she taken off?

"It wasn't a tough decision," Ramirez said. "I knew what I wanted going into the visit. It was just getting on campus, meeting the rest of the coaching staff, seeing the campus and then making my decision.

"I had coaches call me and stuff, but I had a feeling once Coach Neighbors called me that it was going to be a done deal from there. My family knew it was coming, too. I told them before I went on the visit, 'It's happening and it's happening when I get there.' It was pretty easy, they weren't shocked at all."

Arkansas head coach Mike Neighbors went 13-18 (3-13 SEC) in his first year of a rebuilding process at Arkansas, but Ramirez and most others believe better days are ahead for the Razorbacks.

"I feel like he's built a resume," Ramirez said. "He's been to the Final Four so everybody knows he can get us there, too. That's going to be big these next couple of years. He's getting the right kids around us and everything. It's going to be interesting the next couple of years, because we're going to start doing some big things at Arkansas."

Ramirez will have to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, but she believes she can help the Hogs in a lot of different ways.

"I think I bring a lot of confidence," Ramirez said. "I'm going to feed energy to everybody. I'm going to knock down open shots, score the basketball when we need to, play defense and just be a leader on and off the court. I'm going to put the basketball in the hole. That's what Coach Neighbors wants me to do, whether that's shooting, passing, whatever it takes for us to win."

TCU is so different from the hogs. So she wants a title bad. I just hate to lose someone to an SEC school. I am sure there are lots of reasons here. She will be able of course to help them out but ......... I am still baffled by this decision. Wish her well

Amber was outstanding from the three point line in the McDonalds' All Star Game. She seemingly could not miss in the first half, and though she cooled off a bit in the second half, as I recall she still set the record for most three point shots made in that game. I was very impressed with her ability to create space with the step back and the step to the side moves, and her release was outstanding.

I was surprised that she was so inconsistent in her time at TCU. Usually, outstanding shooters adjust to the pace of the game and the different physicality of it, but in the games that I saw her in over the past couple of years she was rather ordinary, for the most part. Since shooting is her game, I did not see either outstanding defense or exceptional ball handling in the games I watched.

Her minutes were reduced to some extent, whether to injury or to the decision of the coach based on match ups, so her decision to transfer, take a red shirt year, and to play in a different scheme and a different league is not really surprising. I never question the decision to transfer on the part of a player, whether at Baylor or elsewhere.
There are usually multiple reasons for that decision, and young people have ample time to adjust to their new environment, both athletically and academically, before they engage in competition. We have all made errors in judgment along the way, and when we can make a course adjustment soon enough, we usually benefit from doing so. I wish Amber Ramirez well in her new location.

Looks like Texas Tech grad transfer Reese Caldwell will play for Cal this year.
