University of Texas junior guard and forward Joyner Holmes underwent surgery Thursday to repair an injury to her right ankle.

AUSTIN The University of Texas women's basketball team may have to start the season without one of it's star players.

Junior guard and forward Joyner Holmes underwent surgery on Thursday to repair an injury to her right ankle.

Holmes suffered the injury in practice on Monday and a return to the court has not been established.


The Longhorns are projected to finish 2nd in the Big 12. The ladies tip off the regular season on Nov. 8 against Duquesne at the Frank Erwin Center.

That's a bummer for two reasons:

1. You feel bad for a young person who seems to be getting things together and in shape to play up to her potential.

2. Baylor needs tough in-confernece competition to push us and make us better looking toward the tournament. And Texas has really been the only team that can do that lately.

A third is that this kind of thing can happen to any player at any time including one of our own.
Very scary.

Yeah, I could not read this without thinking of names like Alexis Prince and Shanay Washington. So much potential, so much ill fate keeping them off the court.

2019 RECRUITING

Holmes is a huge loss for Longhorns and the conference. She has not played to her potential so far, but most of us expected a much better year this season. UT will adjust, nevertheless a big loss. I was looking forward to seeing her play.

UT will be plenty to handle. Not worried about it.

What's best piece of advice your coach has given you so far?

BAY Kalani Brown God must have a uniform.

ISU Bridget Carleton Where do I start?! A few are... WE before ME, the special people finish everything, and appreciate what you are given!

TCU Amy Okonkwo Basketball is not who i am. It is what i do with who i am.

TEX Joyner Holmes While sitting out currently, use your voice as much as possible your team will listen. Stay positive day to day.

What's the drill that when you hear you're doing it in practice you smile
... and what's the one you frown on?

BAY Kalani Brown A drill that I like is shooting and making free throws. A drill I don't like is pressure free throws which you're running for missing free throws.

ISU Bridget Carleton I love scrimmaging, period. I don't love when we hear "get on the line."

TEX Joyner Holmes Smile ="Get Water". Frown = Triangle Rebounding.

TCU Amy Okonkwo Smile = 50 in 5. Frown = Tennessee Drill.

WVU Tynice Martin I smile when coach says "get on the free throw line" because that means practice has wrapped up.

Besides your own arena which is clearly your favorite, where do you enjoy playing most?

BAY Kalani Brown I enjoy playing at Texas because of the rivalry, the atmosphere is just great!! Just like us they get a lot of fans.
ISU Bridget Carleton Ok State, for sure. I love how unique their gym is!!
TCU Amy Okonkwo I love playing at Kansas State.
TEX Joyner Holmes Waco, TX. Always a sold out crowd.

I like how both UT and BU players enjoy playing away at each other's place. The environment is everything for these girls.
