I was a little surprised Fritz didn't get minutes today, as she is usually next off bench, along with Jana, but in Jana's case, the height of OR, based on past performances, would have been been problematic, and in a post game convo, Coach mentioned her shortened bench and said the smaller rotation was based on defensive play. We know we played player to player defense for almost the entire game and that Fritz came from a program that played almost exclusively zone. She's still, I suspect, grasping the finer points of how Baylor plays man and working on getting instinctual about it. She is still learning and will have many more opportunities for those learning experiences, but this was not the game for that. She will get her opportunities…I think she has too much to add to not get some minutes, but she came to learn a different style of play, and she and her fans will need to have patience and let that happen.
As far as coaching job, it was a smart approach against a team taller at every position but not quite as speedy as us. Today required us to be more aggressive and tougher than the other team. I remember Coach saying last year how she had to coach the players to be aggressive and dive on the floor for loose balls, etc. Well, this team hustles after loose balls, balls heading out of bounds, rebounds ( against this team taller than we were), and gets steals by getting in the passing lanes or knocking balls out of the hands of the player intending to initiate play who is trying to let the offensive players get in position to run the offense. I think both AB and Dre got a layup off a steal at the top of the key.
Good win, nice break where the players can focus on being students and get those finals out of the way, and nice, fairly stress free game as tuneup for Miami, and Miami nice tuneup for Texas. This team is 7 and 0 and still has tons and tons of development ahead. Will be fun to be along for the ride and see how it plays out!!
